I can see how the addition of an inbuilt DAC will appeal to some end users as well as occupy its own unique strata in their amp lineup. It did in current form seem somewhat surplus to requirements in their amp range.

The Elicit was reputed to be something of a departure from their house sound- it will be interesting to see where they go with this iteration.

The new design will be interesting as well. Will it look like a mini Aethos?

I bought an Elex-R this year and had an issue that required replacement. During that time my awesome dealer loaned me his Elicit. I did not enjoy it as much as the Elex. Don't get me wrong, it sounded great, but that Elex-r just had a certain magic that we love. To each their own.

I am sad they don't have a DAC in their lineup for another year but I'm intrigued at the new Saturn.

I won't be buying any amp with a built-in DAC.
There are enough of them on the market.
Rega should stick to what they do best and avoid adding toy features that degrade the product.
I'll add my own DAC, Thanks. :)

See the Rega Research site for the new Saturn 3/DAC.

    Thanks ;)
It looks good but I wonder how it evolved from the Saturn-R

I believe its a mass market demand as in headphone output.
People. will use their stereo with TV and streamer too.

I wonder when we will see this. Also interested in the quality of the Dac. If it is better than the Dac R on its own, I will be extra tempted. :)

Me too, but I suspect the new Elicit will sound like a better Elex-R.

That would be sensationel if built-in DAC would better their separate.

There's a worldwide shortage of goods, doubt release is just around the corner.

very appealing to me. I'd love to go one box and just add turntable and transport.

headphone jack too. other than not having a streamer built in, it has everything i want.

easy enough to hook up a Pi running RoPieee, but would be nice to lose that box too

As an Elicit-R owner I am interested in how this differs apart from the obvious feature changes. I do think it looks better.

Would guess they realized a DAC is useful as many people use their stereo with a TV

Maybe some streamers would improve by connecting to Elicit DAC ?

I asked Rega about the dac on Instagram and they told me that it is a Dac R without the filters. That sounds promising!

There were a lot of reports about Elicit-R having the protection activated with some speakers. Something tells me it would be the same with mk5.
I like the connectivity: tape monitor and pre/main separation.
Dislike the absence of mono switch, L/R balance and the gigantic remote that uses very few buttons for the amp. They offer digital ins but no cd transport in their range. At least they should have made the dac optional. Why pay for two dacs?

What is the significance of the ALPS potentiometer?
Is it better than the old vol. control ?
Is it better than the vol control in my Elex-R?

But for the DAC, it looks pretty much identical from the rear.

Alps is the maker. Less common than Alpha or CTS, but still a Japanese company that is well known. They are just name-dropping a brand.

It looks like they put audio through a potentially scratchy mis-matched motorized dual-gang potentiometer, like the Alps used on this $20 remote control, instead of using an analog volume chip close to the audio signal.

A no-expense-spared receiver would instead replace the pot and gain stage with a TI PGA2320 active digitally-controlled volume, for example. Channel matching under 0.1dB, -110dB distortion, -120dB dynamic range. No waiting for the motor to turn, MPU to remember input gain trims and headphone level and add them to the volume.
