the lone star was like a 2nd home to us. we knew everyone there and hardly ever paid for shows. the ritz and the bottom line were like that too along with the lone star when they moved uptown. saw tons of great shows back then.
I sat in one night with the sounds of s.f. on drums. it was john cipollina, Gregg douglas, alex ligertwood, dave margen and joey Covington. I sat in for joey. a later version of kingfish opened and I played with them too.
I saw them in “72 -ish”; as headliners at mid-sized Hockey Arenas - and they were great - and plenty loud, both at Brown University and Cape Cod Arena.
that's cool never got to see him...when he left the NRPS I was bummed...Skip was a good replacement bass wise but they lost an excellent writer and Dave just fit perfectly...does anyone know why Torbert LEFT them?
I read it was Matt Kelly got him to leave to start Kingfish. Someone posted that Beat Club video, it's got a lot of great examples of David Nelson's tele technique, he's maybe the textbook definition of an underrated player. Though he later got a Parsons/White style B-Bender, it wasn't until around 73 or so, before that all of his bends are done by hand, some really excellent work from him on display there. This track features Torbert on bass and Nelson on electric guitar, there are some great examples of his fills and bends on this track, not to mention the solo! (It's Garcia on piano, just like on Powerglide's "Lochinvar," and I swear I hear Dawson on backing vocals, though he's not in the credits.)
this was my 1st time seeing kingfish. I heard about the show while at the 1975 dead show at the great American music hall. I over heard one of the dead's managers talking about it. strange bill, eh? we didn't stock around for aerosmith.
I don't remember the title but very famous... Nearly the end there is a San Francisco celebrities meeting and John D is beside Janis...
another New Riders Thread here: O' and I forgot to add...my band was playing there and a dude asked for my pick! It was really strange. a tight stage!
Gypsy Cowboy (mentioned up thread, but worth another mention). My favorite Powerglide song is Contract with its bounty hunter story.
yes, I love that one! Dave Torbert was writing some good stuff that carried into Gypsy Cowboy...On My Way back Home...great song.
. Yes, it is and his title track for the album is excellent, too. I felt that his songs on Panama Red weren't as good. I liked Dave's voice as well and hated to see him leave the band.
