New Smoke anthology: WHYWHYWHY?

Of course, it sounds like crap. Listenable, but barely; the high end is screechy in the same way the Kinks CD reissues were. This is surprising from this production team. The bass is also boomy and incredibly unnatural. And yes, friends, there's compression. A lot. More than the little bit that usually gets panties in a bundle, anyway...Sydney Gill used to have a soft beginning. It doesn't anymore, really.

And of course, these guys do the usual marketing move of strategically leaving a few tracks off (in this case, several live tracks from early comps, and while hte Chords V aren't The Smoke, their A-side *is* written by the guys, so why not include it?) so you're forced to buy earlier discs.


Blech.
