Amazing episode! This is a new era of Trek, and as such, I was not prepared for Spoiler Culber's death.
Spoiler I don't believe Culber's dead. The actor appeared on AFTER TREK and pretty much indicated he'd be back. Whether his mirror-self will replace him, or he just ain't dead, we don't know.
I give a B-. It started well with the first couple episodes - then went down. Though I like the captain - he is no Jean Luc. Spoiler My wife thought up a great drinking game with this show - everytime they do something that another show has done - you have to take a drink. Ex - Ground hog day episode with repeat killing of captain - done before on Supernatural. Jump to alternate dimension/timeline where their versions are evil - done before on Dark Matter. And the latest - one of their own going to turn on them - Battlestar G. I also think the ship design was taken from Contact/Star Gate. It is definitely worth watching and we will stick with it. I also do not care for the Klingons look - I like their badassness - but the look is too much like Alien Prometheus.
To me the big appeal of Orville, is they are not resorting to crazy let's try to look dark and dreary and have bright lights all over, as an excuse to have no idea how to make the future look. Discovery looks like they are going for style over anything truly creative. Orville is nothing like Galaxy Quest, but closer to True Star Trek, than Discovery ever could be. Don't get me wrong, Discovery is appealing in a way, but in not many ways that Star Trek is to me. It seems to be Anti-Trek, in look and mood and atmosphere. Orville seems to be carrying on what makes Star Trek appealing. Far more fun than Next Gen and very insightful and full of drama and a bit of comedy, but not a silly show by any means.
I wouldn't say nothing. Both shows feature humans having exciting sex with other species. What the galaxy needs is more space porn.
I’ve seen two episodes of The Orville, one of which ripped off Black Mirror. In my opinion, the show is very unoriginal. It’s TNG window dressing with bathroom humor. Any new addition to a franchise should bring something new to the table, not attempt to replicate what has come before. That is where Discovery succeeds and where The Orville would fail if it were a Star Trek show. Thankfully, it isn’t. Thankfully, it is nothing more than a blatant ripoff.
It was probably the most derivative episode so far, but the concept is so much fun and they handled it brilliantly. It could seem too light, so they included some surprisingly high stakes for some of their characters that added some weight to the episode.
I get you are enamored with Discovery, but Orville is far closer to what Star Trek ever was or tried to be. Discovery is priding itself on trying to be Anti-Trek, but I am not bashing it, its not a bad show at all truly! If Discovery is set before Classic Trek, why does it look totally different and way more futuristic and so on? Maybe different for the sake of different? Im not bashing on Discovery, both shows have a lot of appeal, but just in completely different ways. Replicating what came before, or building on something that was enjoyed before, is not bad in itself. I still see Orville as being Far more true to Star Trek, than Discovery is. Not bashing on either, I like them both.
My wife and I have seen the first 5 episodes of Discovery so far, and we both like it a lot. On the other side of the coin, we barely got through the first episode of The Orville...we thought that was horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible.
This game, performed in totality with all of pop culture, you'd die of alcohol poisoning: Overdosed Tropes - TV Tropes
I was completely knocked out with E10. A backstory revealed/clarified, and all the fan speculation about the mysterious person in the Palace has me truly excited. Director Frakes knocked this one out of the park.
Well not sure what to tell you, the Orville does change/get better as it goes on, but maybe not what you are looking for Star Trek wise.
It was another fun episode. I like Tilly's character and previously liked her awesome hair when it's loose and wild, but in this episode... Spoiler I liked her even more in the dominatrix-captain gear! I was very upset at the doctor's death. Why do shows feel compelled to kill off likeable characters these days? It's understandable in the The Walking Dead, but do all shows have to do it?
The doctor's death happened in the alternate reality, wanna bet that he will get back to life when the crew gets back to their reality?
But he’s still the same doctor from our universe. The doctor from the mirror universe is now in our universe.
That really, really should have been in a spoiler button, but luckily I've seen it. Spoiler: Possible idea I've always thought the Doctor's character was written very bland, maybe purposely so. Maybe they were planing all along to have the character replaced with the mirror universe version, to give the doctor some edge. It really sounded like this to me in After Trek. The show runner was saying that the doctor and his relationship became popular far faster than they expected. Maybe they didn't expect us to care much about him until the Mirror Universe storyline.
So many fan theories paid off this week. Really good episode and the first time I’ve been as excited about Trek since I heard “I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service us.” almost 28 years ago.
I loved tonight's episode and was genuinely surprised by the reveal at the end. It was a very pleasant surprise! Ash's identity was a surprise to me as well. I believed that he was probably Klingon but not necessarily a specific Klingon. I didn't pay much attention to fan theories. I was only vaguely aware of this one when it was first proposed but never dug into it. Not only was his identity a surprise. His fate was a surprise to me as well. I didn't see that little twist coming after his sentence was carried out. That scene was set up nicely by the scene in which the sentences of the three crew members were carried out.
Interesting to note in “After Trek” that the same actor played Ash in both Klingon and human form. Usually you can tell but I couldn’t do so.
Well Discovery continues to be a surprise with some nice twists. Kind of figured out what was going on but there were still some nice character surprises in the way the reveal was handled for the last episode.
Wow! Just wow! Spoiler: Episode 12 I did not see this coming! So now I'm guessing next season Michael will be the captain. Nice set of twists, impressive writing. Easily worth the price of admission to be experiencing this first hand!
I didn't see it coming either. I doubt that any of the fan theorists came up with this one, and that's saying saying something in this day and age of seemingly endless fan theories. Great stuff! Edit: I just did some perusing on Facebook, and apparently, this was one of the multitude of fan theories out there. I'm glad I wasn't aware of it.
