reading some articles is probably more productive than asking members here about these genres, because they don't include much beatles or stones...

I would love to request a reissue of this from Universal, and there's more than enough Polydor material to fill out the CD. But it's one of those I had to step back from (for now) because I just don't think the fanbase is there to move even the 1000 unit minimum. But there's definitely some quality material on this album.

Interestingly, I haven't been even aware that the band were deemed controversial by some. Here's what the eminent post-punk critic Simon Reynolds wrote once about them:

And although he would later cover and praise the other "failing art-rock" acts in his comprehensive book "Rip It Up & Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984", the Psychedelic Furs still did not receive a single mention there. Strange...

Oddly enough that comp. has held up pretty damn well over the years. Haven't read the book, word is the American edition had lots cut from it to condense it down. Like all critics I'm sure he has his biases and so didn't include bands he didn't personally care for.

It seems crazy to get this far without much discussion of the Cocteau Twins. Whether you're a fan (I am - massive) or not (which I can't imagine, but...I get it), there's really nothing like them before, or since.

"The Pink Opaque" was a North America-only compilation/sampler and is a really good place to start...it gives you a taste of their early, more typically Goth stuff, as well as the first part of their swing into more melodic, dreamy pop.

Of their later stuff, "Heaven or Las Vegas" goes even further in the dream pop direction and...it's just a nearly-perfect thing.

Yeah, that album (and band) is pretty darn obscure, and perhaps unjustly, as it really is good, as were many of the singles and b-sides from that time. But I get that there's just not enough demand for it. I've always wondered if Cherry Red might tackle this one, as they've reissued some fairly obscure albums from that period that surely couldn't have sold much.

I was trying to list bands that are perhaps a little more obscure, but the Cocteau Twins are among my top three favorite bands. I've been a massive fan since the 80s. A good deal of their 80s work kind of straddles the line between post punk and goth, IMO, so definitely appropriate for this thread. I agree that The Pink Opaque is a great starting point. It's also just an all-around great collection of songs and I still listen to it to this day.
