Which one? Promise is by far the darkest, Immigrant and Discover are more goth-infused glam rock, and House of Dolls is when they just said "screw it" and became a pop band. Can't say I'm familiar with the stuff afterwards, but those four are solid.

Late Gothic at best. :) Weren't the original Goths Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees and The Birthday Party? :)

As mentioned earlier, Birthday Party were not goth, even if two of their members looked very goth. But Bauhaus are, of course, the universally acknowledged "godfathers" of goth, and the Banshees were also crucial to the foundation of goth. Sisters of Mercy were very much goth, even though they loathed the term (hell, most of the early goth bands despised the label).

Well, there is a compromise possible: Nick Cave was in his London years (early 80s) a wellknown visitor of the (goth) Batcave Club in Soho, London...

Sure, but that doesn't make The Birthday Party's music goth. Plus, no goths that I ever knew listened to The Birthday Party, and they seemed to be divided on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, i.e., some liked them, others didn't. The important thing to me, though, is that The Birthday Party's music just doesn't sound that goth overall. Definitely at the more atonal, discordant, and darker end of post punk, though. It's just that when you put them alongside the bands that we can all pretty much agree are goth, The Birthday Party stick out in a lot of ways. They could certainly be dark (e.g., "Jennifer's Veil"), but in ways that for me don't quite fit the "goth" mold.

For what it's worth, The Birthday Party did some shows with Bauhaus (though at that time both bands would have bristled at being labeled "goth"). At one of these shows, according to David J's autobiography, some members of The Birthday Party pinned Peter Murphy down and drew male genitalia on his chest with permanent marker.

The band had been around since '77 though and there's plenty of demos and live stuff about. It's the same story for a band like Chelsea who didn't release an actual album until '79 but were around for years before.

I never said "Dirk" was a first wave punk album just that the band definitely was.

Yes, I understand where you are coming from but I'm specifically talking about Dirk. When most people I know think of AATA they are not thinking of the early demo period or Dirk. They are thinking of KOTWF and later stuff. My point is Dirk could be considered related to post-punk given the time period in which the album was released and the sound.

To me the Birthday Party were just taking Funhouse-era Stooges and making it even more weird and extreme. Some of the darker, slower songs could be something a goth fan would like but the band in general were not a goth band.

Ministry's "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" is arguably their closest album to the Goth genre:

The Birthday Massacre has a female vocalist. They are goth/post-punk, but also w/a bit of a metal-leaning.

    LP/CDs:

    Nothing and Nowhere
    Violet
    Walking With Strangers
    Pins And Needles
    Hide And Seek
    Superstition
    Under Your Spell

No, not the Stooges but The Pop Group. Take a listen to their album 'Y' (just released as a great box set) and you know where The Birthday Party got their sound from.
