I saw on Twitter that both CD and vinyl are coming November 8th.

Agreed. I'm thinking the beautiful cover is the land where he hopes his son now inhabits.

It looks like something you’d see in a Jehova’s Witness pamphlet.

We also know it will be a gatefold -- I wonder if there is an 'alternate' image on the back or inside -- a more 'nightmarish' vision. If the album is explicitly dealing with his son, probably not.

But if the cover is the "children" view -- I wonder what the "parent" view might look like...

(Kind of like Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience)

Pretty darn excited for this release. I do wish the vinyl was available next week too, but I LOVE the immediacy of the album announcement and the digital release date coming so soon after. I might even invite a few friends over for a first listen next Friday as I suspect it’s going to be a fantastic album (based on the fact he has no bad albums in his discography)!

That doesn't sound like Nick. I saw one of the “conversation with” concerts this year and he was not given to sentimentality, even when talking to people who themselves had lost children.

It's kind of weird how everyone want everything that he's doing now to be seen in the light of the tragedy with his son. I mean if that is what he wants to write about then fine, but I don't understand the hunger a lot of people seem to have for what I would deem tragedy porn.

I agree. It's Nick's right to reflect on his life in his songs but not his responsibility or duty. Ultimately the test of a song on that subject is the same as the test of any other song: is it good? He's written good songs about his drug addiction so he certainly has the ability.

As most are saying, this is great news.
I have all Nick' stuff from the Boys next Door days up to Skeleton Tree.
Always interesting, often challenging, always worth getting.
This will certainly end up at my house.

It is also great news that Distant Sky will finally get a bluray release.

The cover is excellent, it actually has similar colour themes to Rival Sons recent album. Same artist?
I remember folks being weirded out by the video for Breathless, expecting some violent turn of events at the end or something. I sometimes think the fans are more serious about all this than Nick is lol

Speculation about the title. Nick states Ghosteen - migrating spirit.

I guess this certainly suggests a possible connection with his son.

There seems to be a conceptual feel here, I wonder if it is a concept album?

Anyway. Looking forward to this a lot. Never disappoints me.

Someone posted that in this thread ... I don't know how accurate, but I have been waiting patiently for it, so I hope that's the case

Disagree. I don't think it's pornographic to assume that the death of a child could inform an artist of Cave's emotional depth for many, many years? For a fan to speculate on this topic feels fair/reasonable to me.

And I could be wrong, but calling an album "Ghosteen" does beg the question.

You must have skipped Nocturama! 3-4 good songs on that tops. The rest? :hurl:

I like Nocturama. It is merely positioned between two very strong albums.

Respectfully, I don't know any example where fans/press etc have suggested that Cave has a responsibility or duty to process this tragedy with his art? Is this something you've seen?

Knowing a bit about Cave's aesthetics, I think one can make some reasonable assumptions about the post-death work. But that's about it?

Yea, it seems silly to call it a hunger.
I would be stunned if there was no reference at all, but Cave tends to keep it real with his internal narrative.

If you have to vomit when listening to Nocturama, what does happen to you listening to the radio do you go ****ing epileptic or what?

I specifically said I didn’t have a problem if Cave wants to address the tragedy so no I obviously don’t find it pornographic if he should chose to do so.

Being the first batch of songs written since the incident, it would be weird if his son played no part in the frame of reference at all.
It seems from the title of the album, and some song titles, that there will be influence, even if not direct reference

I have to mentally tune out to avoid doing so yes ;)
I’m sure you have seen the use of emoticons to help express exaggerated opinions before? If not- welcome to the internet, you’re in for a wild treat.

I deeply love Nick Cave (as an artist, not on a personal level in case you also need clarification in that regard). I have all of his albums (2 copies of Nocturama despite my low opinion of it incidentally) and even managed to endure Bunny Munro!
However, I think it is important to be able to express disappointment or even a disliking for some material of an artist who’s work you mostly admire.

For me I have no real love for The Birthday Party, For Her To Eternity (bar a handful of tracks), The Carny & at least 50% of Nocturama. I expressed earlier in the thread too how I would appreciate a shift back to a more melodic style of singing from Nick again or at least, less atmospheric soundscapes from the Bad Seeds musically. I’m sure others disagree with me on that too. Its great others enjoy that material- more power to them! :)

I also expressed disbelief at a poster earlier implying its hard to get tickets for Nick Cave due to “trendies” - an opinion I find condescending, elitist & ludicrous. Perhaps that opinion also offends you- apologies if so.
Here’s another that might shatter your reality- I love Nick’s work & love the Red Letter files too but I wish people would stop treating him like a grief counsellor since the death of his child. He doesn’t seem to have any issue with it though so hey, just my frankly insignificant opinion.

I will be intrigued to hear where he goes with this one.
I am kind of hoping for a hybrid ... the soundscapes inside some traditional Seeds material...

The other thing to think about with Cave, is whether this will lean more piano/ballad/pastoral or guitar/grind/rock... or perhaps encapsulate the whole seeds spectrum.
It is certainly going to be interesting.
