Yes, I wouldn't bother if I were you. I think you've said enough.

Weird thing to wake up to today, never thought I’d see this viewpoint expressed about Nick Drake of all people. On the other hand, thanks Sear for reminding me to put on Five Leaves Left, almost forgot to get my daily dose of dour music

As a fan of Nick Drake and Joy Division, I liked this post as it's a valid opinion that I totally understand.

Nick Drake's music is not dour.

Also criticizing an artist for how some of their fans may choose to interpret or celebrate their work is idiotic.

I don't think it is either, but get why people would. I do suffer from anxiety badly and depression to a lesser extent, but I'm more likely to turn to more uplifting to me music than Nick Drake on a bad day. I love all his music and find real beauty in it though.

I've read that, in many cultures, a pink moon is a harbinger of the apocalypse. I'm not sure I want to express my interpretation, given the current detour this thread has taken !

I struggle to find anything dour or depressing about his first two albums - "Pink Moon" is more intense but, seriously, even that's sunny and upbeat compared to a lot of Roy Harper!

I don't even find Pink Moon depressing. Bad music depresses me!

Then I guess you have only yourself to blame, for reading it.

That is a really troubling conclusion to come from another human being, blaming the artist for the fortune he was raised in. Are you also charging he didn't deserve the quality of his abilities?

No wait - don't bother answering, the deeper you dig yourself, the more comfortable you will be on my Ignore List.

I'm not that much of a fan. I have a comp that's solid and enough. I also don't find his music that dark, by and large it's English folk with all that entails in terms of lyrics and playing, with not much of a twist. Dour and a bit monotonous for sure. Might be his early demise that colors everything. Joy Division is dark.

Actually, I myself made a similarly-inspired comment a few years ago here, that his privileged upbringing, could have left him unprepared for any potential ambivalence from the general public, and perhaps react badly to that. But I would have never come to the conclusion that his position in life was undeserving of getting appreciated by those able to hear the quality of his art. There would be a lot of creative, inspired people waaay up on the list before you would come to judge Nick Drake. In fact, quite a few iconic, successful artists come from a courtly life, being in position to take patronage from royalty; because in some eras, those were the only ones who could see their way to have the facilities and opportunity to create, instead of sowing beans to feed their family.

This is almost like thinking you deserve to judge a lottery winner unworthy, based on the obvious fact that he was lucky enough to find himself holding the right ticket.

Another 3 pages added to a zombie thread by someone who has nothing to say but wide criticism and narrow basis.

    I'll pass.

For fans, the 86 euro box is the way to go.

Why can’t MOFI not do a one-step 45rpm 2LPs of Five Leaves Left?

AFAIK, the master tapes for that one are lost, or are at least too far gone. The last vinyl repress was cut from a digital source. (Bryter and Pink Moon were cut from analog.)
