Ever notice how some tunes seem to come alive and make more sense when it's dark out? A couple of very dissimilar tunes popped into my head and I wonder if other folks have faves when it's nighttime... Tune one is "You're Gonna Miss Me" by the 13th Floor Elevators - that tune just seems more evil and the monster throb vibrates like crazy - gotta get a clean mono version to get the right effect which takes some digging (Nuggets box or High Fidelity soundtrack is where I've found it on cd) - where's the stereo for this one??? (Sorry Grant!); next up is "One Summer Night" by the Danleers - some of you might have noticed my taste for the old and pounding type of tunes, but this smoochfest makes the hairs on my neck pop up - I have it on a Mercury Doo-wop set mastered by Dennis Drake (hey, where's he been hiding???)

Seems like all music sounds better in the evening. It's quieter at night. Birds go to sleep, kids go to sleep, the wind usually subsides a bit. I think the body and mind adjusts to this "night tempo" as well.

For night music specifically, how about Some Moody Blues?

I hate to sound like I'm boasting about tubes again, but it's selfishly romantic when the lights are out and the orange glow kinda becomes the audio nightlight. :)

Personal favorite: I Walk On Gilded Splinters by Dr John. For the full effect, shoot for a real hot summer night with a storm far off in the distance and... OK, I'm getting a little too personal here...Great song from a great album that I'd love to hear with the Steve Hoffman touch. ;)

A couple that I can think of right off the top are
Black Sabbaths Planet Caravan, Gary Wrights Dream Weaver, Rush 2112, Billy Thorpes Children Of The Sun (the whole album), The Moody Blues Nights In White Satin, Pink Floyds Wish You Were Here.
Ok well maybe more than a couple.:?)

Actually, your stereo is supposed to sound best around 2 am (no joke). Something to do with the power supply being tapped the least at that time.
Anyway, Charles Mingus' Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is incredible with all of the lights out and simply the glow of my EL-34 fat bottles!

Yes, your system should sound better at night. Perfect time to play Nat "King" Cole's "Love Is The Thing".... :)

Tom Waits "Nighthawks At The Diner" is a great 2am album. I don't have anything with tubes in my stereo (that's not apart) so I'll have to settle for the blue glow of my old Marantz reciever. ;)

Peter Gabriel's "Rhythm Of The Heat" is a good lights out tune as well.

Ahhh, the glow of a Marantz blue faced component - definitely adds to the effect. Warm orange tubes glowing - I can see a time when my older brother had a pair of Dyna ST-70's glowing in the dark, and watching an EL-34 decide to die but first put on a Northern Lights rainbow show of color before it pooped out. Old timers probably get misty eyed when they think of giant needle meters showing the juice was flowing! I'll add Seger's Night Moves and Jerry Lee's Whole Lotta Shakin' to my list - listen to how the echo subtly rides up and down with the pumping piano of Mr. Lewis - Uncle Sam Phillips' crew nailed that one...

I heard an interview with Peter Wolf a few years ago where he said, "at night music sounds better, cigarettes taste better, beer tastes better. All the vices are better between 12 and 4" or something to that effect.

Ahhhh the night. Watching the warm glow of the tubes in the dark (nod to Sckott) and listening to Linda Ronstadt's Nelson Riddel albums. So relaxing - you just sink into the mood! (Now I know what they looked at before the invention of TV! And most TV screens are STILL tubes!) (Hey - tubes Rule!)

But the absolute best is Kate Bush - my favorites are The Dreaming and Never for Ever. It gets soooo errie in the tube glow. It can scare the '?*$&@ outa ya!

    Any Kate fans out there?

You said it!! When I was setting up my new listening room last weekend, I HAD to make sure I put my Marantz in a spot where I could see it while listening ... It's quite a trip listening in the dark with that beautiful blue glare shining out ...
