Checked my old copy of Nevermind on CD. No hidden track. I'll have to eventually hunt down an old copy that has it.

I saw an interview with the guy who did the remaster for In Utero. He stated that the reason it was remastered better then Nevermind was because of how the fans reacted to that remaster. Apparently, he actually listened to what people were saying and decided not to make the same mistake again.

Technically, there are 3. As mentioned earlier, the initial run of CDs didn't contain 'Endless Nameless'. I have a stamped promo of it that I got the
week before release and it has no hidden track. Then I got another promo that contained it about a month or two later.

It should be a very easy task. The majority of these have the hidden track.

Is that the one mastered at The Mastering Lab or Masterdisk?

Around 2000, I bought the MFSL's of both 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero'. For some reason Best Buy had them for
$17.99 each. So I figured 'what the h&ll' and picked 'em up.

I bought Nevermind around 1998 in North America and it lacked "Endless, Nameless", which really upset me in the pre-Napster/Limewire/Kazaa era

I take the original CD over the MOFI but a needle drop on CD of the European Universal "320" vinyl would best both.

Supposedly, the first Japanese CD release of Nevermind (MVCG series) has a different mastering from the original US CD. I don't own it, however.

Around the 3 second mark in those clips, compare that cymbal splash. Either the MFSL has boosted the "air" (the region above 10k) or the Geffen CD tames it a bit. But "bright" may not have been the best choice of words - I think more people associate that with the sound around the 8k-10k region, not above.

FWIW, I'm listening with ear monitors plugged directly into the computer.

Actually, the Japan MVCG-67 has the same mastering as the original US CD (DGCD-24425)

my US copy is missing 'endless, nameless.' it was purchased the day of release by my ex's father.

probably technically still belongs to him, too.

Have you verified this via EAC levels or some other means? 32XD Japan1 claimed otherwise. If you're right, then you just saved me some money ... thanks!

I've been listening to the 2011 remaster a lot lately as that's the version available on Spotify and I don't have any physical copies of the album anymore. It's not THAT bad.

Guess the Nevermind remaster is ultimate proof (not that it's needed) that the "remaster/reissue" is often about $$$$ - a perfectly good-sounding album that is very easy to obtain a copy of is treated to an ear-bleeding remaster job and packaged with non-essential filler. Yes, there are absolutely dedicated reissue labels. Probably doesn't say Universal on the sleeve.

It is in fact a different mastering, I own it, used to have the US, and can say that it's the best that album's ever gonna sound. Forget the MFSL too by the way, the EQ is pretty bad. I've compared all 3. Japan hands down. Same for In Utero as well.

Dave shared his with me and the peak levels are identical to mine (1991 idk what country), with differing TOC. Anyone knows what this means?

Mine says mastered at The Mastering Lab, his Japanese version at Masterdisc

Yeah, I definitely know they are the same peak levels. Not sure about TOC.

I bought my CD some time during the spring of '92. It does not have it either.
