Axe master Bill Nelson played drums on his band Red Noise's track "Furniture Music", which is coincidentally an excellent example to teach someone to play, drums .
I have seen people proficient on other instruments be absolutely worthless when sitting behind drums. Guess it depends on how one defines "competently". Some people have a good, natural feel from the word go and you might be one of them. Dan
Somebody probably mentioned this but... Basement Tapes: Robbie Robertson played drums on ‘Apple Suckling Tree,’ ‘You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere’ and ‘This Wheel’s On Fire.’
The Replacements switch instruments for the title track of Hootenanny and it shows. Paul Westerberg on drums.
The Velvet Underground's bassist Doug Yule plays drums on half of the Loaded LP, including Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll. You can hear him sort of glitch a drum fill on the restored bridge of Sweet Jane at 3:31.
Check out the excellent Summer Of Soul documentary, where a 19-year-old (!!) Stevie Wonder absolutely KILLS on drums in the opening moments. (There's a half-second in the trailer below at 1:08.) I already knew Stevie was an amazing drummer who played a lot of his own signature parts (famously "Superstition") but it's still badass to see him doing it live.
Beach Boys: The Wanderer Denny went out front to sing, while Brian played the drums and Al switched to bass
Rivers Cuomo plays drums on two songs on the Red Album. He's not too shabby either! As a drummer I do have to say that this thread is kind of funny, even if it's just dunking on the fact that drummers are often considered the most expendable and least-talented of the band. I can't help but have a love for the instrument, even if it's not respected.
I was watching a documentary on Love, and their drummer seemed to have problems, and was told by Arthur if he screwed up a section in a song, he'd fire him..... That drummer also said Arthur played some drums, not sure if it made it on record, but it could have been replicated later with less seams.
