Benz, I understand your feelings. Personally, I've never had an issue with idler drive. I've owned 3 of them and enjoyed them all. With that said, I do like direct drive because of the quick start time, like for a radio station machine.

I DO love my 1959 Garrard Type A, tho! It just has a sound that is so *right* for old records.

Mine was just too noisy for true hifi, and nothing could tame it

That motor could probably power a washing machine, wouldn't surprise me

Thats interesting. I cleaned out the underside of mine and re-oiled it, while it isnt absolutely silent, its not noisy at all.
I use it basically for challenged records,as I have a conical stylus it it. It really does sound better than anyone would think for a 60 year old table.

I like the blue/black, but dislike the gold. Matter of taste, really. We both agree its a great table

. So you are saying there is no point upgrading from a SME 10 to a 20 let alone a 30 . Why do they make the different models?

That pretty much sums up what the common folk think of our hobby and quest for the holy grail sound, yes?

Because people upgrade. I upgrade. I have bought high end turntables. But I also know that buying a higher end turntable might not result in better-sounding vinyl playback if I screw up the set-up. One of the reasons I dumped my VPI Scout was because no matter how much effort I made, I could not get the antiskate set right. It would not play the HiFi test LPs torture tracks. I really hated that turntable and I know that it's a favorite of many here.

Everyone has their own personal taste.

Just imagine listening on this setup. Just looking at this equipment give me cold feelings. I could never relax there. I want my equipment to be practical and feel like home.

The Rockport was a great table.
In my experience, the better the table/arm, the more it gets out of the way-- you are hearing "less" from the table-- but it really is something revealed over time in first hand comparisons, not a "drive by" at a show or dealership or whatever. It shows when what you thought was OK is revealed as a coloration, or some other artifact. And of course, the whole question of cartridges and phono preamps contributes since none of this can be taken in isolation.

" Getting out of the way " is what it's all about. May the music pass unencumbered.

LP-120 (and saving for a potential upgrade in a few months)

But that really is irrelevant because my point was being how i wouldn't desire those features in a turntable (accentuated by its price) i didn't say it was a bad table. I just said it was for me. (not the "No thanks".)

Each design out there seems to have there pluses and minuses. So now we know you are in the direct drive camp.

If you ever have the chance at an audio show to hear the Kronos with the opposing platter and w/o (a demo they like to do), you will not be able to deny the difference this bit of engineering has on the audible sound.

I am not suggesting it is worth $35k or whatever, but the difference, especially in the low end / bass is truly stupefying....
