First of all, I'm a huge fan of the Rhino Nuggets box sets than came out in the late 90s. Nothing beats 60s garage rock IMO. I recently picked up the original album on vinyl recently, which is great, but are there any similar collections out there that include the "bonus" cuts from the box set? This was one album that was improved through expansion. Also, some thoughts on a few of the tracks... "It's-A-Happening" by The Magic Mushrooms and "Spazz" by The Elastik Band are two of the craziest singles ever recorded. "The Trip" by Kim Fowley is one of the most unintentionally hilarious. What are your favorite tracks from the album?
There were all kinds of variable quality vinyl collections that followed Elektra's Nuggets (Pebbles, Boulders, Fuzz Flakes & Shakes, Teenage Shutdown, Back From The Grave) and some had some tracks later used in the CD set. Usually though they were taken from vintage 45 singles and not always mint condition ones.
I guess I liked The Knickerbockers' Lies the most, but I've gone on to get albums and collections of just about every artist on the original 2 records. I really got into The Mojo Men at one time.
I dig some of the bands a lot like the 13th Floor Elevators, The Chocolate Watchband, The Shadows of Knight, The Standells and We The People for example.
Here's one of my favorite single disc garage compilations. Various Artists - Uptight Tonight: The Ultimate '60s Garage Collection - Amazon.com Music It goes great with the Nuggets box......even with some overlap. My favorite Nuggets box songs (of the lesser known groups/songs)............. "Mirror Of Your Mind" - We The People "Story Of My Life" - The Unrelated Segments "Going All The Way" - The Squires "Blackout Of Gretely" - Gonn
LOVE the Nuggets Boxed Set! A few that come to mine that I love... I Ain't No Miracle Worker No Friend of Mine Going All The Way A Question of Temperature Journey to Tyme Last Time Around Talk Talk
How about tracks that should have been included on the Nuggets box set? Here are a few I would have added: 96 Tears - ? & the Mysterians 99th Floor - The Moving Sidewalks In The Past - We The People Gloria - The Shadows Of Knight
Why weren't "96 Tears" and "Gloria" added to the box set? Copyright issues? They would've been perfect!
I liked the Nuggets II box set. I don't have Nuggets III or whatever the 3rd one is called. I think that focused on bands up to the 90's sometime...
I hate the term "garage rock". These are perfectly constructed pop songs regardless of whether they were written in a studio or a garage. Sorry for the rant. I agree with you that Nuggets is great.
Don't you mean 'SETS'? "Nuggets II" is just as good! The booklet says it all; "You bought this, perhaps without knowing ANY of these songs, because you trust the name, "NUGGETS"!"
Have the first two boxes and love them both but the song that just sucked me in like no other? MOULTY!
Why is it the wrong box? The single version would have fit nicely . It is similar in vibe to The Trip by Kim Fowley or I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night by the Electric Prunes. It has a psych/garage vibe.
I created a poll years ago and these are the results. Pick Your 10 Favorite Tracks From The First Nuggets Box Set
First song, side one: Electric Prunes - I Had Too Much To Dream last Night. Still the best and most perfect hybrid between garage and psych. Honorable mention for Sagittarius - My World Fell Down.
The individual cds from the 80s - which feature better mastering - have tracks not included the box. The Mindrocker box is a terrific collection as well.
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) by The First Edition was one that I liked from the earlier cd series that did not appear on the box set.
The Chamber Brothers were more an R&B/Soul outfit who recorded only a few psych-oriented tracks. But you're right, Time Has Come Today would've fitted in seamlessly. It was actually included in one of the volumes of a Nuggets series released by Rhino in the 1980s: Nuggets, Vol. 9: Acid Rock.
The original is one of those compilations that's so well put together, that it works as an independent album.
The rather harsh mastering makes it difficult for me to listen to all in one sitting! But it's one of the greatest box sets out there.
