One of my favorite Beatles songs. I didn’t know so many folks hated it until I stumbled on these boards years ago.

I like the song, and for the record John liked it. He even came up with the intro.

Christen some idiotic algorithm based on nonsensical assumptions as “science” and poof- now you have ammo to shut up your equally moronic friends.

He came up with the intro because he was sick of rehearsing it.

John may have liked it at one point, George too. What they hated, more than the song, was the time spent on the song. People mistake this, them being trapped with Paul for almost 40 hours in one week rehearsing this song, with their critical thoughts on the song itself.

It's based on John's words and pretty much his own songs. He, in one of the interviews on the Beatles songs he is talking about Another Day (IRRC) and how he did not understand Paul's songs about average people and that he could not write songs like that.

If you look at his career it is not a subject he does often, and on some of the few times he attempted them, such as his songs on the Medley, he thought of as trash and did not bother to finish them.

Not only the best pop song, but the greatest song of all-time and, in actuality, the greatest work of art ever, as is all things Beatles whether sober or not.

The nadir of The Beatles' catalogue to these ears. I loathe the song and skip it every time.

I don't hate Ob-la-di-Ob-la-da the way a lot of people do, but best pop song ever? I suppose an abstract scientific analysis can say it, but I just can't see it.

I love it, always have, apparently so did the other 18,000 folks singing it at the top of their lungs in the arena last June.
One of the highlights of the last tour for me. Now scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I knew it all along. Ha

Nonsense. Almost every single ABBA ever produced is a far better pop song, for a start.

  19. One of the principles of science is that incorrect postulates lead to incorrect conclusions. That is one thing that has gone wrong here.

The other thing wrong here is that "best" is not measurable or verifiable.

Obla di was a no1 in may countries for the Beatles, in some other for Marmalade. Its a stretch to say Abba single had that same mass appeal.

Music is subjective, I never understood why people get so upset over others not having the same opinion.

I personally like the song but depending on my mood it can be incredibly annoying!

incidentally, the BEST pop song is "Just Like Heaven" by The CURE.
and that's not just "my opinion"
    Donald Trump said so.

    Some great Pop songs:
-Any of the major hits written by Burt Bacharach and recorded by Dionne Warwick in the 60's
-I Think We're Alone Now...original version by Tommy James
-The Rain The Park and Other Things by The Cowsills
-Kind Of a Drag by The Buckinghams
    -Close To You, Carpenters version
-Build me Up Buttercup by The Foundations
-I'm A Believer, NOT the version by it's writer!!
...of course, literally countless more. But what makes these great Pop songs is that they each have an indefinable element (or elements) that plays well on any popular radio station and makes people feel GOOD while they're playing. It's not just about the SONG but very much about THE RECORD, Creating 'the" great Pop RECORD is much harder than creating the perfect Pop SONG, One of the songs above is a great example of this; when TJ and The Shondells recorded ITWAL, it resulted in a "great Pop record". When what's 'er name did it in the 80's (I don't mean Lena Lovitch who actually took it to an entirely other level)every bit of magic was drained from the song making it a lifeless, faceless, and very typical 80's hit single.

I prefer the Anthology version, if only for John's yelp at the end of the track: "Ob-la-di-bla-da, brotha!"
