Exactly. Which is always the ultimate futility in these matters. Likewise, it gets to a point where all of us who aren't enlightened with the magic ability to know "good music" from bad then have to ask: Which of the 2 million objective responses is supposed to be the one that is right?
How does one even answer the question in the thread title? What objective measure even exists for “the best album of all time? And if there was such an objective measure, it wouldn’t matter what anyone thinks because an objective measure would be definitive.
Subjectively: 1. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde 2. Talk Talk (Tie) Colour of Spring or Spirit of Eden 3. Stones - Exile Objectively: Please choose one of the above
I know the other day i picked Exile as the best album , just had a quick toke and now im listening to Klaus Schultz album Mirage , its now the greatest album of all time .....see you tomorrow
Objectively, there are a good few albums in the history of music that could be termed game changers. In the annals of rock and roll I find it hard to see past Highway 61 Revisited. And I say that as a lifelong Beatles fan of whom you could say more than one album changed everything. Born To Run remains my personal favourite album but I would not claim it as a game changer for the genre just for Bruce.
Easy. 1. We like music. Music is good. 2. Music is made up of notes. 3. More notes means better music. 4. The best album is the one with the most notes. 5. Count the notes.
Just as “literally” is now being used a synonym for “figuratively” then “objectively” seems to have been introduced as another word for “subjectively”. Just my objective opinion of course.
Sgt. Pepper. It’s not my favourite album but I do think it’s the greatest. It was massively influential — both for good and bad, and musically and production-wise — and no album in my lifetime has had a bigger impact. It was everywhere in the summer of ‘67.
There can be a best from a subjective perspective. "I believe that the Archies are the best group ever." is subjective and is perfectly valid if that is my opinion. You may not agree, but believe that the Monkees are the best group ever. From a subjective perspective, that is your opinion on what is best and is perfectly valid.
If it's my opinion, it cannot be objective. However, from a subjective perspective, I believe that "Highway 61 Revisited" is the greatest [rock] album of all time.
Therefore- in my opinion- if anyone has a subjective ‘best’ group or album, then they must have a very narrow taste in music.
That's silly. I have over 4,000 rock, pop, folk, jazz and classical CDs and LPs, most of which I listen to fairly regularly. So I hardly think that I have a "very narrow taste in music". But I certainly have favourites and if pushed, I could pick one as the favourite. Although that choice could possibly change over time.
With regards to any art, what is "objectively the best" is a nonsensical question. Art appreciation is purely a subjective endeavor. To believe that any one of you is able to choose an objectively best album of all time, is nust plain ridiculous. Hell, I have a collection of so many absolutely brilliant recordings, and I wouldn't even be able to choose, subjectively the best 10, of any genre. There was a recent thread asking for everyone's choice for their favorite (subjective) album of all time, and not only did I have to break it up into 3 categories, but the best I could do, was narrow it down to 10 within each.
