I remember noticing the gender reversal lyric the first time I heard the song when I was about 9 years old and thinking so things don't have to just always be a certain accepted way necessarily. I really liked that. It struck a chord with me.

The Granny Music phrase came about from these two sources afaik

    1. A Melody Maker interview given December 6th, 1969 where John said, "The Beatles can go on appealing to a wide audience as long as they make albums like Abbey Road, which have nice little folk songs like Maxwell's Silver Hammer for the grannies to dig. "

    2. John also allegedly, "openly and vocally detested" the song, Obla-di Obla-da. calling it Paul's "granny music ****" according to studio engineer Geoff Emerick, in Here There and Everywhere, p.246

At this point in his life, John seemed to hate everything and everyone in the world, except himself and Yoko.

I dearly love the White Album but have never, ever like this track or Good Night.

It's fine. Nowhere near a favourite but I don't mind it, don't skip it and I like the crisp production of it. Nice bass and drum sound.

I wish the absolutely wonderful I See The Rain was their best known song.

I dread to think. I won't go there! I'll stick to his magnificent Sweet Soul Music album.

I like it, unlike “All Together Now” and “Maxwell”, which I think are vastly inferior.

Catchy and fun. Among the top 1/3 of the White Album and the track most likely to have been a #1 single.

"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" is one of the best examples of McCartney's ability to match surrealism with incredibly catchy music. It's something that defines a lot of his music, and is quite an unusual combination. I never tire of this track. It never fails to make me smile and feel a little bit weird at the same time. Absolutely love it.

The version on Anthology with the acoustic guitars to the front of the mix is my favourite.

It's a harmless bit of fluff, I've got nothing against it really. However I do work with someone who says it's his favourite Beatles song, which I find completely baffling.

I like it, always did, always will. Having said that; I can go a year or so without it. It ís a lightweight song because The Beatles always bave these and I love them for it!

While we always hear about John apparently hating the song, according to the accounts (and pictures) we have of their stay in India, he was there alongside Paul in the garden as Macca worked on the song, almost certainly chipping in a contribution or three. The song works particularly well on side one of the White Album, a jaunty singalong in the midst of some heavy rock stuff. I also like the alternative version that appeared as part of the Anthology series. In short, lay off the song. PS: I never much cared for the Marmalade version that was a hit in the UK and which changed the "bra" line in the chorus, presumably so as not to cause offence!

One of the songs that put me off the Beatles, all those years ago.

I hate it, but no more than most of their stuff.
