Like A Hurricane owes a lot to Ruby Tuesday as well. Getting back to riffs, the Stones made up for it by ripping off Thunder Island (Jay Ferguson) for Start Me Up.
As well as Waking Up from The Stranglers' No More Heroes I think they "borrowed" another Wire song for that album but I can't remember which songs
Are you sure? It definitely sounds played rather than sampled to my ears and I’ve known 10538 since it came out.
Elastica -Line Up borrows from Wire - I am the Fly, in addition to the others already mentioned. Blur's Theres No Other Way borrows from See Emily Play.
A lot of leeway. Its a chromatic* thats been in use for hundreds of years. "Tales of great Ulysses" Cream " Summer in the city " Lovin Spoonful Also many similar cadances in "While my guitar gently weeps" "Walk don't run" all just played with different stylings and sometimes a substitution or deleted chord. its all "basically" an " Andalusian Cadance" from the influence of Spanish, Arabic and Jewish music in 13th century Spain. It no doubt goes back to ancient Greece with their modes named after intervals in scales like Dorian etc. Sorry for the music lesson, I could be slightly mistaken. My music teacher mom just called this a *Decending Chromatic, nothing more. Take care, John M.
Two that were major copyright infringement lawsuits: Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" borrowed from Spirit's "Taurus" George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" lifted from The Chiffon's "He So Fine" Somehow, Zeppelin prevailed in their court case, but George lost
That's what Wikipedia says! It was producer Brendan Lynch's idea, Weller wasn't happy with it at first but Lynch said if Jeff Lynne sued the money would come out of his share of the royalties. So it is played but by Jeff Lynne!
The Cult - Electric "Wild Flower" = AC/DC "It's A Long Way To The Top" And I am pretty sure that there's a song on STP NO. 4 that fits that mold as well.
Foo Fighters stole their own riff, only one album removed: "I Should Have Known" (2011, Wasting Light) "Something From Nothing" (2014, Sonic Highways) EXACT same main riff.
I could be wrong, but that chord progression is so "day 1 of playing guitar basic" that it's totally feasible they aren't related at all, lol.
I recon The Beach Boys nicked the verses of Kokomo from this coke jingle, especially the bit from 0:10 to 0:18
The opening to the Kinks' Sweet Lady Genevieve sounds just like I Should Have Known Better --- at least to these ears.
Some more: Starmaker, The Hard Way - from "I can't explain" Destroyer - from "All day and all of the night" (!) also the Hendrix-like riff on the Preservation single
Thats some good Brian impression towards the end. John Phillips wrote Kokomo. Mike Love added "ooh I wanna take you" "come on pretty mama"
T. Rex - Get It On = Hollies - Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress = Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll = Oasis - Cigarettes & Alcohol
