When U Love Somebody Another track where Prince proves to be an excellent "music worker" but (musical) inspiration is missing. OK ... 2.5/5
When U Love Somebody I like this uptempo poppy song. It’s nothing new or groundbreaking, but it’s catchy and fun. Especially the chorus. Just a little great song without pretensions. I like the guitar throughout the song and the horns (NPG Horns and the Days Of Wild cover band) are tight. They remind me of Sleep Around from Emancipation. There’s also a bit that sounds like In This Bed I Scream in there. The extended ending is interesting. This is a minor 4 out of 5.
"When U Love Somebody" is pretty good. The horns are great. Definitely a highlight of the album. I am less enthusiastic about the second half. I'm not sure what he was going for with the bit about his balls being round but it hurts the song. Still, I'll give this a 3.5/5
When U Love Somebody This one sounds more like a classic soul pop number. Not bonkers on it though. 3.8/5
When u Love Somebody 3/5 Every now and then it might rain! I always was fond of this song. The horns and writing are nice and has potential of being a single. All my partners say I need 2 dismiss ya! Until they see U smile
"When U Love Somebody" recalls some of the poppier stuff Prince wrote for protegés in the 80s, though the live horns and speak-singing prove we're in the 90s. Otherwise, it has a lot of that offhand flair that made Prince fun, before he started taking himself so seriously. I don't even mind the length; there's always some new twist. 4/5
When You Love Somebody... I really like this song. It's upbeat and I like the part when he sings when you love someone. Whoever somethings lost, somethings gained...when you love someone 4/5
When U Love Somebody Pretty generic, sounds like it could be sung by Debarge. Very 80s cheesy pop vibe to it. 2/5
Today's song is "Shoo-Bed-Ooh", written and produced by Prince, both credits attributed to The New Power Generation. The New Power Generation – Shoo-Bed-Ooh Lyrics | Genius Lyrics Recorded at Paisley Park in May 1997. : all vocals and instruments Kirk Johnson: drum programming with uncertain contribution from: Rhonda Smith - bass guitar (credited, but uncertain contribution) Rev. Scott - rhythm guitar (credited, but uncertain contribution) Mr. Hayes - keyboards, background vocals (credited, but uncertain contribution) Marva King - background vocals (credited, but uncertain contribution)
Interesting lyrics, music a bit uninspired. Reminds me of Emancipation, what with the whining synths (I actually like that sound) but it's a little less bland than that record. In the end, it goes by kind of nicely if forgettably. 3.1/5
"Like something from EMANCIPATION but better" is I think exactly right Lance. I very much like the way the various keyb tracks move and shift and shimmer in the background. the title hook is kind of an easy gimmee but it works. Dissecting this CD which I always dismissed I'm finding its a bit better than the sum of its parts, or so it seems if I make myself give it detailed attention the way this thread is inclining me to do. RATING: 3.5/5
Shoo-Bed-Ooh I love Prince's half-spoken vocal on this one but not so much the "Shoo-Bed-Ooh" parts. 2.5/5
Sounds like an escapee from Emancipation. Except with more creative synth work. I'm getting Derek Wadsworth Y2 Space:1999 soundtrack vibes. 2/5
"Shoo-bed-ooh" This may be superficial but I have always hated the title/chorus. To me, it just seems like Prince was too lazy to think of something better. It was fun when he did that (supposedly on a dare) on "La, La, La He, He, Hee," here it just seems uninspired. This starts a stretch of the album that I find very monotonous. We get three mid tempo non ballads in a row and I really feel it hurts the flow of the album. Individually each of the songs are okay but hearing them consecutively makes me rate them lower than they actually are. Anyway, perhaps due to its brevity, this may be the best of the three. There is a bit more going on here than in the next two tracks but "Sho-Bed-Ooh" is a song I will never love. 2.75/5
Shoo-Bed-Ooh “So you thought you just might lose your mind today…” I like this song. The social commentary story is sad, but on point. The decay of life… “You wonder aloud if you're happy - you say, "Yeah"… As if you really are.” The chorus is catchy and laidback. Again, this is no classic by any means and actually a bit forgettable. It is better than its reputation and much more interesting than many songs he would release in the following years. Not a bad song at all. This is a solid 3 out of 5.
