Yeh I mistyped above and noticed too late to correct---likely for reasons similar to what downinahole says, this lp hits the ears as WORSE than the sum of its parts---while individual tracks I can find value in when I carefully dig down, the whole thing doesn't quite work as a pleasurable experience, or never did in the past.
Shoo-Bed-Ooh - I'm with the pack on this one. The song has plenty of space to breath, the keyboards are inventive and add texture, the verses are good (and I like the vocal) but the chorus is just, well, not really a chorus. 3/5
"Shoo-Bee-Doo" "Shoo-Bed-Ooh": More creative spelling that in this case makes me question whether Prince understood syllables. (If it's some sort of pun, that's worse.) It's also the entire chorus, which seems stapled on when he couldn't think of anything better. I do like the Blaxploitation wah-wah effect, though, and the verses are listenable. The bridge is kind of rote. 2.5/5
Shoo-bed-ooh... I like this song, even with the weak chorus. It just moves at a cool pace that I can groove to. 4/5
Shoo Bed Ooh Ugh that high pitched keyboard sound is back.. Bland and irritating all at once. Songs like this are why I never reach for this album to listen to, on the rare occasions that I am in the mood for some 90s Prince. Blech. 1/5

Push It Up I like it better than Jam Of The Year, though I can't really explain why, might have to do with the context, this song is not part of the album he was born to make 3/5
I don't know. I actually like "Jam of the Year" so this just feels like a B-side. It also feels like a throwback. When someone starts rapping on a Prince record, I automatically tune out, unless it's Prince itself. Not saying that this isn't a good rap, because I tuned out so I can't judge it. I like Chaka Khan's screeches and Larry Grahams co-lead vocals are nice. Really, not too bad. If this is meant to sound like fun, I think it succeeds in a way that doesn't seem too forced. Part of me feels like Prince does this kind of track in his sleep. 2.7/5
Feels totally generic. We've heard similar from him before, better. I was gonna give it an extra point for Chaka, but... 2/5
Push It Up - it would work well as one of the remixes in an EP, but not taking up 7 minutes on a Prince / NPG album. I like the Doug E Fresh contribution, but the 'ooh everybody's here, this is the jam of the year' chant is really flat and irritating. It always reminds me of the Cafe de Paris show (below), which was an all round brilliant night. So it gets half a point for sentimental value. 2.5/5
PUSH IT UP---the beat and the awful synthetic timbre of it are both super generic and annoying, the "remix" aspect merely annoying, this certainly sits near the bottom of any regard or desire to listen again I have for a Prince track. Being reminded why I always kinda was down on this cd. RATING: 1/5
Push It Up A regular funk thing and I like it just I like regular Funkadelic or regular rockabilly or regular dub reggae. 3.8/5
Push It Up I like the p-funk feel of the song. It is funky and gets my foot tapping. At first. After a minute or 2 it getting boring quickly... And the song is about 6 minutes. It's going nowhere. It's just recycling Jam Of The Year, which isn't a great song to begin with. This might have worked live, but this studio version doesn't live up to the expectations of a big party with Prince, Doug E. Fresh, Larry Graham and Chaka Khan. Is this the inspiration for Shelby J.'s annoying "Put yo hands up"? I liked Jam Of The Year more without knowing Push It Up existed... This is a 2 out of 5.
I rarely go below a two when rating Prince songs but there's just not much going on here to capture my interest. I don't have a problem with a good repetitive funk jam but this is not good. One of the rare Prince songs that annoys me more than it entertains me. It MAY have worked at three minutes but it just goes on too long. 1.75/5
"push It Up" seems like he pushed one out after a long bout of musical constipation ... 1/5 Larry graham ... no ... synthetic slap-beats ... no chorus .... no everything about this is one big NO ...
