Found a used copy of Steve's Elton John DCC GH yesterday for $20. Oh, the fool who got rid of it! Breath of life abounds, three dimensional sound, EJ's voice never so clear. WOW! Great job!
"It's a real shame the DCC GH 2 never saw a commercial light of day." That's for sure. Listened to Rocket Man a few minutes ago- can't get any better.
One of the best aspects of Steve's stuff- when you hear a 1970s recording, it sounds like you are listening to a 1970s recording, not 1990s or 2000s with all the sterile remastering that goes on elsewhere. (With the exception of good guys like Anesini, of course).
Joel, that's probably one of your finest $20 purchasesyou'll ever make. Congradulations on finding one. They ain't plentiful, especially at that price.
It doesn't get much better than Elton's Greatest Hits from DCC! I found a used copy recently for 15 dollars, and then a few weeks later came across DCC's Eagles' Greatest Hits for 7.99! No slip sleeve, but for those prices I aint complainin'!
Funny you should mention that one... http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27960
That is one of my all-time favorites. If you like the sound of this one, don't wait to pick up the MFSL of Honky Chateau. This one sounds so much like Steve woulda done, all the way through.
I found a used copy with the slipcase for $15 last spring. My wife was with me, and she could not understand why I suddently stood still with a look of shock on my face. Then I played the disc for her when we got home, and she understood. That disc truly is stunning. Joel said: That's what I thought when I found my copy. Someone probably replaced the DCC gold CD with the current Polydor remaster.
"What is the general consensus on the best version of EJ's Self titled LP on Cd?" I have the original DJM version of the self-titled EJ thanks to a heads up from a fellow forum member, and think that it sounds excellent. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
A question and a comment. What are the flaws of the Mercury remasters- NR? I also must recount a heartbreaking experience. I saw the DCC Highway 61 Revisited at another used store, but they were charging $30. I couldn't see myself paying $30 for a used CD unless it was an emergency priority and that album — as an album — is not on my emergency priority list. But if I saw the Elvis 24 Karat Hits CD — no hesitation.
Steve whooped MOFI on this one! Great job on mastering, you'll never here these songs sound so good on CD!
