The few times I've seen this disc on eBay, it's attracted a fair amount of attention. I think the last one I saw went for about $75.00.

For some reason, this CD is particularly tough to find... there are a couple of people I know **in Japan** who haven't even been able to find copies.

Well that's a bit too rich for my blood (he says whilst running out the door to get that winning lottery ticket). :D Sheesh! I didn't even pay that much for my DCC 24KT Gold Sampler.

    Hi Joel,
How does this compare to other import versions out there? I have had an imported title of this since the later 80's I think. I wanna say its German, or UK. I just haven't palyed it in years. Of course I haven't played my other McCartney comps in years either(All The Best, Wingspan)- Wingspan can sit there forever as far as I'm concerned.

I have the old black-label Japanese pressing (first US release), and it sounds very good to my ears. However, I have no other Wings compilations to compare it to.

    GOOD question from "reidc" above!

Can anyone tell me about the one that I have in my collection? (Note: This was one of the first CD's that I bought back in the early 80's)

    It's PARLOPHONE/EMI/MPL #CDP 7 46056 2
Disc says Made in Japan/Jewel case has a sticker pasted on back over statue that says Made in Japan.

Thanks for any info on this,
    Chris C

I am assuming this is the same mastering as the black label Parlophone disc, made in Japan. I have the same disc Keith has. I bought it for myself as a birthday gift back in 1987! :D

Well, a fair analogy would be to say that they bear the same relation to each other as the Toshiba "black triangle" version of Abbey Road compares with the "official" 1987 EMI version. Mainly, that the '87 version isn't necessarily **bad**, but the earlier Toshiba disc clearly has the edge in natural sound and dynamics.

It is a tough one to find. I lucked out and got mine off GEMM.com from a store in South Africa. Definitely well worth it. This one was released in 1983 or 1984 a couple years before the black label version.

Mine has the Japanese writing along the spine and English writing: WINGS GREATEST along the opposite spine. Also the song titles are all in Japanese on the back of the case (back cover). Is this what was exported to the U.S., or is this a release for the Japanese consumer?

Yes, the sound is super! :righton:

Your disc was made for the Japanese market, though I suppose some copies may have been imported into the US as new copies back in the day. The official original US release has all-English inserts, and the disc label has a black coating.

    Ok-
I dug mine out just now. Instead of being one half silver disk/black writing and other halfblack disk/silver text- mine is all black background with silver(chrome) text.

Mine says made in Japan, and on the left it has the 4 box within a rectangle saying "stereo", CDP 7 46056 2, BIEM/JASRAC. Made in Japan. It is Parlophone MPL. The only place itmentions EMI is on the back of the jacket. This was bought sometime in the late 80's(87/88??)

    Any difference?

Chris, it sounds like you have the same disc Keith and I have. It's the keeper though! I am still assuming the disc we have is the same mastering as the black triangle.

Looks like Chris C above also has the same thing! I remember that this was the first release I had seen for it back then- as it had not been released "domestically" yet.

I don't know how relevant this is- or even whether its true or not- but here goes-

I thought I read somewhere that there were two levels of Japanese issues. One issue was the intended fabled Japanese issue with the liner notes and obi, and the second was a pressing only intended for "export" as it was subbed out by foreign labels because of pressing plant issues.

Now I know back then- some CD pressing plants were just beginning to take hold domestically, and there weren't very many around. I have heard of some European imports pressed in Japan as well.

I listened to it this morning during my commute, and boy it does sound good. I never got the US release of this.

I might compare some of the same tracks to "All The Best"- I bought that one, as I thought it had some stuf not on Greatest- Comin up?

I wonder about that. Are the tracklistings even the same? Regardless, a lot of people praise the black-triangle disc, but I rarely read the same praise for the black-label US issue (Japanese pressing).

    Thanks for the info, Keith.

I just looked at the eBay listing above...and it is exactly the one that I have! EMI / Odeon CP35-3144

I was happy to get it recently for $9.99 at a local store in Tampa, used! :righton:

The Toshiba "black triangle" disc and the later 1987 disc are made from different masters... the later disc is from the "standardized" McCartney catalog of masters that EMI/MPL issued worldwide.

The black triangle disc is the only issue of that particular mastering... just like "Abbey Road".

Out of my price range now. I've wanted one of these for a long time, but they just cost too much now. If I only knew years ago what I know now, I could have gotten it when it was cheap!

I'll come clean in that I was the winner. I am a first-pressing collector, and I really love that Wings compilation. Everyone says that the black-triangle disc is the one to have, and the partial CD-R I have of it (missing a couple songs at the end) tells me that everyone is right. I can't wait to give the original a spin.

This is certainly more than I wanted to pay, but as I said, I love the music, and this disc never seems to come up on eBay. I'll tell you that I was shocked to win the disc. My wife wanted to take a walk tonight, so I threw the bid in with some 40 minutes or so left, and I only had a $6 cushion.
