Rick James tried out for P-Funk and didn’t make the cut. He cursed them out and split. Stole plenty from them and had a big career
I wonder about all these supposed auditions for the Stones, too. Are these actually documented (Tiny Weymouth, Noel Redding, et al)?
A guy who lived two doors up from my buddy used to tell us he was in Poison until they did too much drugs so he left. Could be the same guy. This was in central PA in the late 80s early 90s.
According to an article in RECORD COLLECTOR magazine, The Bevis Frond [Nick Saloman] auditioned to join Procol Harum, replacing Robin Trower. Nick said showed up at the audition to find out none of the other members were at the audition, which was being handled by "roadies". He said he played badly at the audition, and when the roadies asked him about his equipment, he said he didn't own any. He was told to "bugger off".
I'm sure I remember reading somewhere, possibly an interview with Irmin Schmidt but I can't remember where, that John Lydon tried to contact Can about becoming vocalist for them, I don't know if it's true or not.
I once was jamming with the house band on letterman, i had to get a leave from my job as a teacher with a small school board to take the time off and fly to new york for the mid week gig. We were a small band from ontario canada... it was exciting to be onstage with the most dangerous band... And then I woke up - true story That I was only dreaming... no such band or trip was real... major disappointment when I woke
Topper Headon auditioned for The Wedding Present in 1989. Simon Smith had an injury and wasn't certain to make a tour. Headon was looking for work and the connection was made via RCA. Smith recovered so Headon wasn't needed, news he didn't take very well, telling the band that if he saw then in London, he'd kill them. That's heroin for you.
My old Leicester friend Kevin Hewick auditioned to be the replacement for Ian Curtis in Joy Division / New Order. Kev recorded 2 of his own songs with Barney, Hooky and Stephen. This is "Haystack":- ...the other song "A Piece Of Fate" remains unreleased.
David Dundas of "Jeans On" fame responded to one of their MM ads, I believe. I don't think he actually auditioned for Genesis, but perhaps he did make it that far.
