This is somewhat of a semi-trick question.

Okay, here goes. First, for anyone out there having trouble researching these things, know that the internet is your friend....until it isn't. My method is to punch in key questions that pertain to the clue and then hope for the best. Case in point - for #51, I typed the phrase "singer/songwriter who once was a bellhop" and got several pages that led me nowhere. I then took out the word "once" and got different results, one of which happened to mention Phil Philips. A bell went off in my head, I looked him up and the rest is, well...a Tin star. Narrowing down the time frame helps a lot, too. For this question, I figured most likely the late 50s, early 60s era.
Using the same methodology, I think I have the answer to #52 but OTG's comment about a semi-trick question has me wondering.

    Maybe that's a trick too :)

It may help to simply look up Don Kirshner. That's how I came up with my guess though I could be completely off the mark. Maybe OP can offer up another clue at some point if it looks like folks aren't getting it? C'mon, be magnanimous!

Gold Star on #52. And I knew even before Mylene's clue rendered it beyond any doubt!

    ANSWER TO YESTERDAY'S QUESTION.....

    #52

    11/9/18

This guy was hired by Don Kirshner as a songwriter and had 2 Top 10 Songs on the chart at the same time.

    "Tracy" / Cuff Links
    Decca Records #9 1969

Carmine Granito had his name changed by Don Kirshner to Ron Dante. The "semi-trick question" refers to the fact that Carmine was hired by Don as a songwriter. He became a singer when Kirshner's demo voice, Tony Orlando, left to pursue a solo career. He cut background tracks for Neil Diamond, Jay & the Americans, Andy Kim and The McCoys. He also did demos for songs that would be recorded by the Animals, Ronnie Dove, Gene Pitney and the Vogues. In 1969 his first "ghost group", The Archies hit #1 with "Sugar Sugar" as "Tracy" was entering in the Top 10. Thus, he as a singer, had 2 Top 10 records at the same time under 2 different names. So, the One Hit Wonder is "Tracy" by the Cufflinks. The Archies had more than one Top 40 hit. Ron Dante had multiple hits.

What I found recently after starting this thread was that if someone correctly answers the question soon after it's posting, it takes away the incentive for others to participate. I don't want that to happen since this is a forum. So, let me describe how I think this can work successfully. You have five choices for initial answers...

    1. If you absolutely know the answer, simply post "GOLD STAR", and leave a comment, if you like, about the song that doesn't hint or giveaway the answer. Please come back and post your full comments and memories about the song after the answer has been posted. This is what I want to encourage the most since this is a forum.

    2. If you want to confirm your initial thought and look it up, post a SILVER STAR , with the same criteria as in #1.

    3. If you want to take the time to research the answer, post a TIN STAR. Same criteria as #1.

    4. Post your guesses. But let us know it's a guess, meaning it may or may not be correct. Comments would be welcomed.

    5. Simply post "I don't know" and leave any comments you might have.

With these choices, it gives everyone a chance to correctly answer the question early and still leave room for everyone to participate until the official answer is posted. Again, I really want to hear your comments and memories about the song/artist. So let's start again........

It has always puzzled me how an artist or group could sometimes have a megahit and we never hear from them again. Especially if they wrote it. As a final authority I'll use the Billboard Top 40 charts because that should narrow the field to songs most everyone is familiar with. In some cases, an artist could have had another minor regional hit that no one ever heard of. I know of a One Hit Wonder where the group had two other hits in the South but people on the west coast would have never heard them. I will try to make the questions somewhat difficult to attract multiple answers or guesses. Each day I will update this thread with the previous day's answer and a new question. Correct answers should contain the correct title and artist as it appeared on the record or chart. Give yourself a gold star if you know it and a silver star if you want to take the time to research it. Good luck and have fun!

    NEW QUESTION.........

    #53

    11/10/18

A group from Delft. (sorry, I couldn't find anything else to use that would not make it too easy)

Please choose from the answer options above........

#53 Tin Star. Never heard of them or their hit!

I thought it might be Ron Dante, but didn't do enough research to verify.

I guessed it was Barry Mann. He had Who Put the Bomp as a hit, and it certainly seemed he could have been the writer of 2 Top 10 Hits that were in the charts at the same time.

I see the meaning of Inferno now, but have no knowledge of Ron Dante so could not make the connection. Tracy was OK, but I can never respect a group named Cufflinks.

That's what I meant about the semi-trick question. I said he was a songwriter but did not specifically say he wrote the 2 Top 10 hits.

April 23, 1966--(You're My) Soul And Inspiration was #1 and Kicks (Paul Revere & The Raiders) was #7, both songs written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. This is what I came up with, but didn't see any connection to the Inferno clue.

You and me both. Guess I was too lazy to dig a little further. Cute connection between Dante and Inferno. Went right over my head.

Tin star for me as well for #53. I didn't realize there were so many One Hit Wonders from that country, and 2 two hit wonders.

I had 4 songs to choose from for the latest question and immediately eliminated two. Not sure which one to go with.

Pretty sure I have a gold star for this one

    What rhymes (almost) with "Waterloo"?

I think I know what you're implying, but I think that's wrong. That band isn't from Delft.

Thanks. That confirms one of my guesses.

Thanks. You just confirmed that both of my guesses were wrong.

And because of both of you, I went back to my research and discovered the answer. A tenuous Tin star.

I checked Wikipedia and it says the band I was thinking of is from Delft.

Hmmm. Then we must not be on the same page like I thought. At any rate, I do believe I have the correct answer now. We'll see tomorrow.

    #53 - Silver !

This memorable song was the lead track on a compilation album - probably the first lp I ever listened to when I was very young (obviously belonged to Dad).

slightly off topic I read somewhere that Don Kirshner at one time worked as a bellhop, so linking #51 and #52

But "Who Put The Bomp" WAS a one hit wonder for Barry Mann. I had a totally different interpretation of your clue. A songwriter who had one hit but had two of his compositions in the top ten at the same time by different artists.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting what almost rhymes with Waterloo. I looked up the band I thought you were referring to and Wikipedia says they're from another city. My guess certainly doesn't almost rhyme with Waterloo.
