Honestly the whole recycled plot has never really bothered me.

At least TMP didn't have Uhura getting her brain wiped.

I thought that was bizarre even when I was 7 and saw the show for the first time...

Mmmmm......Yes but Robert Wise is dead.
Too long!? The 1929 silent epic Napoleon was originally 8 hours long. They have shortened it on Blu-ray to a castrated 5 hours. And for those who keep saying Napoleon is a 4:1 film -

    1. No 4:1 lenses exist
    2. There is no 4:1 ratio.
    3. Napoleon is an Academy Standard 1.371:1 movie. The last reel (17 minutes) is 4:1. It is not one super wide 4:1 image but 3 x 1.371:1 projectors together. 3 x 1.37:1 is roughly 4:1. So it is 3 separate images. Not one big wide 4:1 image.

Gone With Wind.......3 hrs, 58 mins
Return Of The King......4 hrs, 25 minutes. (Sp. Ed)
    Gettysburg....... 4 hrs, 10 mins
    Cleopatra.......4 hrs, 5 mins
The Ten Commandents.....3 hrs, 52 mins.
Lawrence Of Arabia.......3 hrs, 43 mins.
Dances With Wolves. (DC)....3 hrs, 54 minutes.
Apocalypse Now Redux....3 hrs, 15 mins.
    Avatar (Director's Cut)......3 hrs.

Doesn't seem to long to me. Maybe by cable 1980's standards it is. It is now 2020.

I mean in a just universe, TMP would have a Blade Runner-esque Blu-ray set. Theatrical, Director's Cut, Special Longer Version. All together in one package for those who need it all.

But we live in the worst timeline, where Paramount put out processed-to-hell early-2000s HD transfers originally intended only as DVD sources on their 2009 Blu-ray set, and here we are.
