Yes also worth noting that the Beatles & Stones toured the States many times between 1964-66' to further their popular saturation but the Kinks only once before their 69' return into the new Rock landscape!

But how many casual listeners, who know these two songs from the radio (And maybe TV or movies) even know “The Baker Street guy” is also “The Stuck in the Middle With You guy”?

I’ll bet more than a few people think “Stuck” is a Dylan song.

That’s respectable. Why is his face so red?

But... He had all those other songs with “Twist” in the title. It was his trademark. His signature. His... Something he always added.

I can’t speak for all of these, but I don’t think Billy Joel or U2 keep selling out stadiums on the basis of one song, overplayed as they may be.

But then, the overplaying of “Piano Man” (Or “With Or Without You,” or “Stairway”) is the point, I guess. When I’m around a radio, or my wife has Spotify on or something, “Piano Man” seems to be the Billy song that nearly always pops up. As a fan of his, it kinda drives me nuts. So maybe you’re on to something after all.

Guess the same could be said for “Born to Run,” “Layla” (Electric or unplugged, take your pick), and any number of overplayed “signature songs.”

Thank goodness no one ever stupidly yelled it out at a concert. Wouldn’t that have been dumb?

    Casual listener! What's that?

    But hey, yeah, I guess.

I don't really have much idea what American's listen to. I was somewhat shocked to discover that Quo weren't huge in the States.

Sort of like “Solsbury Hill,” which seems to be the Peter Gabriel song that gets played the most these days. To the point where it’s maybe eclipsed “Sledgehammer” and “In Your Eyes”?

“In Your Eyes” still casts a pretty big shadow of much of his catalogue, but “Solsbury Hill” seems to be the radio favorite now, in the States. Shows up in films and commercials too.

Someone who knows those songs from endless radio play*, as I said. Someone who knows those Rafferty songs, and only those, and likely doesn’t realize the same guy same both.

Certainly not someone who owns any Gerry Rafferty albums, or hangs out here.

*Could also know “Stuck” from “That song when that guy got his face cut up in Reservoir Dogs.”

I hated that. Tarantino, what a jerk. Ruined that song for a good few years.

Nah... I never hear that one anymore. People still want to discuss/find out who she wrote “Vain” about.

(Pretty sure it was Warren Beatty).

”Dock of the Bay” was the #1 hit though, and being a hit after he died... as great as Otis was, it overshadows the rest in the public consciousness. Certainly the one that still gets the most play and the one most people think of.

But “Tenderness” is a great song. Especially when Otis sang it.

To the extent that anyone, outside of Jeff Beck fans/guitar nerds (Not meant as a putdown) know BBA at all.

Now if you want make a case of “Superstition” overshadowing much of Stevie Wonder’s catalogue, I’d agree with that. He’s got lots of other classics too, obviously, but that one stands above most of them.

But was clearly overshadowed by T.J.Hooker here in the States.

Did this LJ Hooker ever cling to the hood of a speeding car to catch criminals?

    I rest my case.
