I just picked this up at Costco on sale. It replaces an Integra Preamp, a Conrad Johnson Solid State Amp and an Acurus Amp. I'm a bit sceptical, but just curious if anyone here has bought one of these. Thanks!

Should be solid, my family used Onkyo components for a while now and all of them have held up very well. It'll handle anything you throw at it, plus it has a phono input, which is apparently rare these days in AV equipment at this price point; I know my new-ish Denon from a couple years ago doesn't have one.

I, too, have an Integra (Onkyo) preamp since 2006. Some of the DSP chips are failing, however. I’ve always liked the sound from the preamp with separate amps. I hope I like the sound of Onkyo’s internal amps as well.

Does anyone have any opinions on the sound quality of Onkyo receivers?

The sound has changed over the years from cool to warmer sounding. I have an old 905 that I bought in 2007 and I just recently bought a RZ3100 and the sound has improved.

I have to say that, coming from separates for decades, I was a bit shocked at how decent this unit sounds. It's a keeper and the price is definitely right.

    Update:
I am absolutely loving this receiver at its price point! I was playing Steve's "Strange Days" DCC and Morrison's movement on the microphone was very apparent in several places along with other things I had never heard before.
Say what you will about "cheaper electronics" but this one seems to be quite the dazzler. The soundstage, separation of instruments and depth is quite remarkable.

This is what I LOVE about the Onkyo compared to other similarly priced units from other manufacturers

    • Dynamic Audio Amplification: TheOnkyo TX-NR6050 feature Dynamic Audio Amplification which is Onkyo’s amplification philosophy that focuses on capturing the energy and dynamism contained in the audio signal and reproducing it without loss. Audio signals are not static like a test tone, but rather a countless collection of constantly moving waves. While static measurements such as S/N ratio and Total Harmonic Distortion are important, Onkyo believes that excellent dynamic and transient response is the key to emotionally involving sound. Dynamism - the “life” in music - is achieved when the amp can respond to changes in the signal instantaneously, so notes start and stop naturally and the nuances in attack, decay, sustain, and release are voiced with conviction. Onkyo home theater receivers represent the culmination of almost 70 years’ experience in amplifier design. The unique elements of their amplification system comprise high-current, low-impedance architecture to accurately control large speaker cones while enabling instantaneous response to dynamic changes, and discrete wide-range amplifier circuit topology to eliminate phase shift for clear and accurate audio imaging.
I can "hear" the difference. Big time!

I'll opine once I've read that entire novel you posted up there ... :D

I can't imagine I'd have the slightest clue how to operate the device.

I have, however, been impressed by other Onkyo kit I've encountered in the past -- my main impression being a sense of real solidity and value for money.
