I have posted this song to bemusement several times. There's a beautiful alternative take on an esoteric CD released a while (eight years?) ago. Just Wyatt singing.

If singles are allowed, “You got a lotta nerve / to say you are my friend / when I was down / you just stood there grinning” is pretty fantastic.

    Dylan, “Positively 4th Street”

While we're on His Bobness, how about "Pistol shots ring out in a barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood
Cries out 'My God they killed them all' "

I love how the first three Elvis Costello albums open with memorable a capella lines. I forget where I read it, but someone pointed out that it makes it seem as if EC has so much to say that he can't wait for the band to kick in before he starts singing.

"Now that your picture's in the paper being rhythmically admired..."

"I don't want to kiss you, I don't want to touch..."

"Oh, I just don't know where to begin..."

    Stone classics, all.

I'm still not sure exactly what Brett Anderson is singing at the start of So Young (it sounds something like "She can...start...to walk out...when she wants"), but I'll never forget hearing the first Suede album for the first time, and being knocked out by the way he seemed to be using his voice as just another instrument in the band, intentionally making the words indecipherable (c.f. Elizabeth Fraser).

Just about everyone's heard the opening words, and I've heard other songs quote it.

Still gotta go with the one which raises the hairs on the back of my neck every time I hear a couple thousand people sing it at the shows:

    Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
    Don't you cry no more!

  17. ...Which always reminds me of my own favorite one, "Words From The Wise", by Gentle Giant, even though it came out two years later! Kansas were GG fans I believe? Here GG sounds like they were the fans...
