That's a problem I have with some modern power pop, too. Maybe it's because I have kids that age, but to me a lot of these albums sound less like rock and roll and more like a demo reel for Disney XD or Nickelodeon show themes. It just sounds... fake, I guess. I'm not saying it is, but it just sounds contrived to me.
My favorite pop punk band (after Descendents/ALL) was J Church, whose singer Lance Hahn passed away in 2007. Their discography is ridiculous, I'm still finding stuff I didn't know existed. A little of their best: https://youtu.be/y0zoJ6pONF8
The sneering, whining fake British/Valley Girl accent doesn't work for me. The genre instilled me with a permanent suspicion of any band from California.
The Ramones were massively influenced by comic books and played into exaggerated, characterized versions of themselves to develop their image. They even did a box set called Weird Tales of the Ramones that presented itself as an old EC Comics collection. Would you prefer I said comic book characters instead of cartoon characters? I think it’s basically the same thing
It’s the store bought shiny sneer that keeps on sneering: from the band to the audience to the band. it may give third wave ska a run for contemptible.
Ireland's second greatest Punk band, after Stiff Little Fingers, were more pop than Punk. This phone tag single proves it. Of course, by album #3, Go For It, SLF was getting way more poppy than punky,
I'm not disputing that they liked comic books but they themselves hated that when it was said about them.
I love the Buzzcocks. Not sure if other 70s bands as The Rich Kids or The Only Ones would count as pop punk........but I like them too. I'm not a fan of Green Day or later bands.
I was surprised to see someone mention that the Queers were pop punk. I just classified them as a regular punk band with a strong Ramones influence with a side of Beach Boys. A couple of examples: Queers-I Didn't Get Invited to the Prom and Queers-Mrs. Brown, You've Got an Ugly Daughter
Pop and Punk? The two should never meet. It just turns into the inventible soundtrack for a Hot Topic.
I loved and still love the pop punk of The Ramones, Buzzcock and The Undertones. I have never liked all the bands artists that did pretty much the same thing after that.
I’m listening to Green Day Greatest right now, Good Charlotte and then Blink are up next all because this thread got me wanting to hear this style again. Damn probably then Americana can go on. I’m in my 50’s but pop punk was my go to genre and I still enjoy it.
That was me. The Queers made a lot of punk music, but also a lot poppy punk or punky pop. Those are my favorites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z6NgrdKQzg
