I'm playing some flac music files on my 103 via a USB stick. Is there anyway to add artwork?

If the artwork is embedded as a tag within the FLAC, I believe it should show up.

Grab the album cover from anywhere and name it folder.jpg and put it in the folder with the files.

In my experience these "Folder" jpgs won't show up on the Oppo video screen (Oppo 105 here).

Freeware for the Mac call Kid3 will edit tags of FLAC...including embedding art. FWIW.

Did they ever update it where embedded art showed from ALAC or AIFF? FLAC sounds bad on the 105.

Not sure why it would be different for you, I just ripped a bunch of DSF for sacd albums and manually moved jpegs of the album cover into the folder. Shows up no problem even on the oppo app on my phone....

Mmmhh, maybe I don't remember it correctly. I might give it another try. It's been a while since I used the Oppo to play FLAC files directly.

I will admit once in a while nothing shows up and I can't figure out why. I have fixed them as I go. Most my stuff was run through foobar which needs "front" instead of "folder" for album cover.

I just added a Definitive Technologies Prosub 1000 to my Oppo's SW (sub woofer) output.
I went into setup, and turned the sub to "ON" but no sound.
I have large R/L speakers, but when I changed the speaker size to small, the sub worked!
What's going on? Doesn't a sub work with speakers unless the R/L are selected as small?

I assume you were playing a CD? If so, yes that is the expected behavior.

    I was streaming via WiFi.
And so far, as I expected would be, I don't like the sound at all.
Maybe placing the sub elsewhere and other changes will improve it.
But based on my experience at friend's houses and apartments, a sub always sounds like your neighbor is playing the same song loudly at the same time.
    Slow and thick.
I want a new pair of full range speakers that deliver the goods!

Yes, streaming stereo material would have output behavior, as you described.

Agreed, it's very hard to set up a sub for optimal sound with L/R speakers. I wish you luck in finding some full-ranges that get the job done!

I'll assume this is a bit facetious, as was my previous post. It's also irrelevant. Making a statement such as "FLAC sounds bad" compared to other formats on a certain player ought to be backed up with some kind of (semi-)objective data before being taken at face value.

If pictures embedded in a tag, than no problem, it show on video monitor. I am not sure about separate file in the folder, never tried it. That is for FLAC.
    DSF is a different story.

folder.jpg (all lower case) also works, for folders accessed from a local drive connected via USB (at least works with 105D browser). Remote storage is a different story.

For Audio output, with SACD the default is Auto.
This appears to read the DSD and convert internally to PCM. Right?
Then send the PCM to the DAC. Right?

So should it not improve the sound by checking the DSD output option?

I tried it this morning and checking the DSD option changed the sound for the worse.

    What is going on?

DSD output only via HDMI to receiver which does the conversion (if applicable)
PCM can be output via HDMI or the conversion happens internally by the Oppo for analog out.

My impressions are that the multi-channel DACs in the Oppo do an incredible job with various bit depths and sample rates as well as 5.1 etc. for the price. But I am looking at a 2-channel outboard DAC for stereo listening from my music server. I think I can get better sound for stereo listening than the Oppo for 2-chan.

There are some new arrivals on the scene for quality DACS at lower costs than a year or two ago. These are not multichannel of course.

The Topping D50 just arrived at my estate. I’ve not had a chance to listen yet. I will report back on it.
