Tried several searches for this, but came up empty.
I've noticed that many vinyl albums in the 70s & 80s came with these inserts.
Many of the 80s inner sleeves were glossy & in full color.
Is there a way to tell if an album had a special inner sleeve like this when it was originally released?
A good example of this is Linda Ronstadt's Living in the USA.
Here's the color inner sleeve that originally came with the album.

Discogs.com is great for information like this.

Not sure. I've bought more than a few used albums with clear sleeves only to find out they were supposed to come with a fancy printed inner sleeve. Not a big deal if the record is $5 or less. But at the $10 - $15 threshold, I want my inner sleeve!!!

... You know, so I can replace it with a Mofi sleeve. :D

  6. KISS - Music From The Elder had a unique inner on the 1st pressing.

    There were many.

Kiss' Rock and Roll over came with a special inner sleeve, AND a sticker of the front cover.

Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies came with an inner sleeve with the lyrics, a Billion dollar note tucked inside the wallet, AND a set of cards you could press out on the left hand side.
Muscle of Love came with a color inner sleeve, and a white/blue insert with credits.
Welcome to my Nightmare came with an inner sleeve for the lyrics.
Goes to Hell came with an inner sleeve of lyrics.
On the Inside opened up at the front, and the back. Plus it came with an inner sleeve.

Black Sabbath's Masters of Reality came with a poster.
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath came with an inner sleeve with the lyrics (printed on a special kind of paper, too.)

Really - there were many of them.

I'm mostly talking about the printed inner sleeves, NOT the other extras (those are usually easy to figure out).
    Will cross reference with Discogs.
I know some will not be listed.

I bought a crappy copy of the Doors 13 the other day just because it had the weird Morrison holding a lamb sleeve.

Also, I must say, I was cleaning my German copy of Kiss Rock and Roll Over this weekend and the black inner sleeve w/ Kiss logo has a very cool consistency to it, almost like vinyl/plastic. Almost kinky in a way.

Discogs is always a good reference for this. I have found shedloads of 80s albums which have lost their inner sleeves and just have replacement sleeves. I get replacing them but I wish they wouldn't discard the printed inner.

    It is, definitely.
But, it's not a complete source, many titles don't have detailed artwork photographs. (although it just depends on us users to add scans to the site :) ).
And what's more problematic, the size of the scans as they appear on the screen are now quite small. Wouldn't it be great to have a Discogs website with the possibility to stare at large HD scans ? :agree: (I send them HD scans from time to time but the way the website is made, no matter what size the original image is, it will always be considerably reduced in size when displayed).
That's why for artwork sake only, I prefer to use alternate sites such as 45worlds.com ;)

Well I was talking for reference, not for necessarily using. At least with Discogs you should know what you are looking for, I don't think it should be used as alternative source for artwork.

Recently Picked up a copy of Linda Ronstadt A Retrospective (2LP).
Disc 1 was missing it's original inner sleeve (Disc 2 had one though).

I hate when I see the inner sleeve is ripped on the side where someone just yanked the vinyl through it.
I like it when the inner sleeve is turned sideways for easier access to th vinyl.

You mean OG LP inner sleeves with lyrics, photos, credits, etc.?
Loads of them. I'd say one third to nearly half do.
I'M TALKING FIRST PRESSINGS. NOT EARLY REISSUES.

If you look, don't expect it be in the notes as listing. You have to click the album cover to get the images.
I have to agree with the figure 1/3 to 1/2. Sounds about right.

Not strictly unique, as some copies of MMT had the same sleeve.

Fleetwood Mac's Tusk springs to mind - two inner sleeves for each LP in that set also.

It's the missing inner sleeves and inserts that annoy me. Many reissues devoid of credits as a result. Often the main incentive to find an early pressing.

I've been looking at both. 2 releases in my collection that are missing the original inner sleeves are ...

Carpenters - A Song For You

John Denver - John Denver's Greatest Hits

Several other LPs in my collection Have the original printed inner sleeve.

    Yes, very unique...
MMT did not have the psychedelic inner-sleeve that The Beatles - "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album had.

As I said, some copies did come with a Pepper sleeve. This is confirmed by Bruce Spizer and some members of the forum.

Kinda hard to keep track of.
I've passed on an this album because I assumed it was missing the inner sleeve.

I guess it being a gate-fold neglects the need for a printed inner sleeve.
