Pick one of each. Painful as it is, it’s possible.

Cornick is. Outside of this forum, nobody has ever heard of Glenn Cornick. Burke is pretty specific to his genre as well.

    I guess I’ll pick a bassist now...

    Mike Rutherford

For me, Mike Rutherford is the most overlooked member of Genesis. Not only was he a great bassist (and guitarist), but his songwriting was superb. Rutherford wrote two of my favorite Genesis pieces: Snowbound and Deep in the Motherlode (both appearing on ...And Then There Were Three...), but there’s many pieces where Rutherford shares a songwriting credit with Banks or Collins. I don’t think just anyone could have filled Rutherford’s musical shoes. His contributions to Genesis were as immense as his height (he’s not that tall, though --- maybe around 6’ 2’’ or 6’ 3’'). :)

A ton of fun and could rip.

Randy Hobbs - The McCoys, Edgar Winter's White Trash
    Nobody better, just different.

    Steve Upton - Wishbone Ash
The man could swing, shuffle, rock and he played unorthodox.

  6. Phil Solem from The Rembrandts is a very good and very versatile guitarist. Very underrated.

Willie Weeks is known among bass players but not as much by the record buying public.

Jim Bonfanti from The Raspberries is a wonderful drummer.

  7. guitar- David Grissom

bass- Tommy Shannon (Stevie Ray Vaughan Trio)

    drums- Steve Gorman (Black Crowes)

doing a search, I just found out that both Grissom and Shannon were members of the band Storyville, along with vocalist Malford Milligan and SRV Trio drummer Chris Layton, my alternate choice for the drum chair on this list.

I don't recall ever hearing anything by Storyville, but I have a hunch that it would be worth it.

I'll just pipe in with drums and my pick is John Densmore.

Digging this thread and the love expressed to some of my heroes (Martin Barre, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Glenn Cornick, Roger Glover, Art Tripp). As for my choices, it's all subjective and it will change from moment to moment but on the top of my head, right now:

Guitarist - Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers): Creative and tasty. Awesome riffing and very good parts that fit the songs perfectly. He never does stuff that's difficult to play but he sure does stuff that's difficult to come up with. His guitar lines on songs such as "The Raven", "Baroque Bordello", "Tramp" and "Princess of the Streets" are great.

Bassist - Colin Moulding (XTC): Perfect balance between rhytmic and melodic, great tone, great lines. The perfect bass player for XTC but he's coinvincing even outside of that band. One of the unsung heroes of pop and new wave.

Drums - John French (Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band): Yeah, he's acclaimed by the Captain's fans and he played on "Trout Mask Replica" but how many know him outside of the Beefheart fanbase? A beast of a drummer, an amazing musician all around and without him Don would have probably been never able to do a lot of stuff (check out his book "Through the Eyes of Magic" for more details). An honorable mention goes to another Beefheart drummer which I love: Robert Williams.

Is Carter really overlooked? He has to have been in like every issue of Modern Drummer for the last 20 years.

Mike Gordon(phish). His modulas bass sound and skill level get overlooked in the smokey haze of a 20 minute jam. He is awesome on studio tracks like You Enjoy Myself, divided sky david bowie, etc.

Wouldn't know, never read it. But he doesn't get anything like the Peart - Portnoy worship, does he? Or Bonham - Baker from years gone by. Not sure, but I don't see that much about him anyway.

    Guitar: Billy Corgan

Not 'overlooked' per se but among the common fan he's viewed more as the 'singer/frontman' of Smashing Pumpkins and his guitar playing for some reason has always seemed to be second fiddle in comparison to his persona as a leading man personality.

    Bass: Justin Chancellor

An integral part of Tool but is hardly mentioned considering how stacked the talent pool is in the band.

    Drums: Jonathan Moffett

MJ picked him for a reason and he's a good example of a guy who doesn't overplay and has perfect in the pocket rhythm.

Well, I don't think any instrumentalist gets the same worship that they would have any former eras. Different culture in modern music...

The Moody Blues' rhythm section is severely underrated.
I'd also put the original Animals up against the original Stones anyday.
