I'll add John Mayer (guitar) to this list. He's one of those guys who people tend to disregard because his most prominent solo hits have tended to be more on the soft rock/pop side. It seems people wanted to typecast him as music for coffee shops and young adult females. But he's a pretty versatile player as is evident with his current tenure with The Dead. He could probably fill in with any number of bands and still hold his own.

Moulding is a great bassist! Some amazingly sophisticated playing on many of XTC's songs. And indeed, overlooked.

Chas was a great bassist... and though I do like Wyman, I would take Chandler over him in a heartbeat

Melvan Whittington...who started out playing for a number of R&B and jazz artists, was known as Melvan Wonder: he would light up the guitar up onstage, then quietly disappear after the show. Very humble & quiet, so it might be imagined that as he disappeared off stage the audience would ask, who was that masked man? "Melvan Wonder", of course.

...with admirers like Eric Clapton, who stood backstage during an early 70's gig while Melvan amazed. Melvan was considered great enough to rival Hendrix's ability to fill up tracks with monster riffs, though Melvan's style was not an imitation of Jimi's.

Left to right: Arthur Lee (rhythm guitar and vocals), Robert Rozelle (bass). Melvan Whittington (guitar), Joe Blocker (drums)

He joined Arthur Lee/Love to record the unreleased (until recently on High Moon)....the brilliant "Black Beauty".

Some amazing opening riffs on this one..."Midnight Sun"
...a tribute song of sorts, to Jimi by Arthur Lee.

    Melvan is on fire!

Jesse Colin Young , singer/songwriter, was also the fantastic bassist for The Youngbloods. He played some amazing walking baselines throughout the band's recording lifetime, especially on "Elephant Mountain". The Youngbloods all were so talented, bass, guitars, drums, keyboards.

Guitar...Peter Cosey was as under appreciated as Hendrix was revered & sadly his work with Miles Davis is as close as we will ever get to a Miles & Hendrix collaboration

Drums...Jazz drummer Tony Williams, Keith Moon was the Tony Williams of rock

Bass...Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads is one of the funkiest bass players on the white side of the fence ever to record

    For sure.

Throw in his wonderful songwriting and compositional skills and he's the complete package. :righton:

For guitarists, I'll throw out Kenny Withrow (Edie Brickell and New Bohemians) and Peter Svensson (The Cardigans) - even when they're good, the band behind girl-fronted bands get overlooked.
I'll have to think on the bass
For drums, I'll say Gavin Harrison, recommended to us for our consideration by none other than Neil Peart of Rush, himself. Drummer for Porcupine Tree in their later albums and for King Crimson on their recent road trips.

Guitar - Ricky Gardiner. His work on Low (particularly Always Crashing in the Same Car) is absolutely awesome, but everyone always goes on about Fripp and Belew on Heroes and Lodger.

Bass - whoever played on The Old Man's Back Again on Scott 4. So overlooked, no-one (including Scott) could say for sure who it was, though there are some strong suspects. If you want a named one, original Kink Pete Quaife's basslines are a delight to play.

Drums - already been mentioned, but Alan Myers of Devo. Should be a legend outside spud circles as well as within them.
