Lots of strong singers on the list but the only ones that fulfill the OP's opening statement for me are:

    Tom Petty
    Sandy Denny

Since I haven;'t seen the older poll, I won't complain about the lack of singers considered good from the prog world, save Gabriel. If they were included I would have voted for Greg Lake.

  8. Morrison, Winwood, and Charles. Although, if Daltrey and Townshend were available, I'd probably vote for them.

Not sure if the choices were designed to be genre specific, but Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett for me.

thanks for the poll ~ I was able to balance with the other poll (in which I chose 3 female vocalists) with 3 male vocalists from this list. I don't have any sort of innate tendency to prefer singers of one biological sex, but I am happy to acknowledge artists in each group - not in an any sort of attempt to ameliorate the status quo of gender roles - but rather as an appreciation of variety as relates to different individual styles of social interaction as expressed through art.

    Sam Cooke
    Van Morrison
    Otis Redding

I went with Freddie and Kate.

Still not listed: the only voice that reaches into my soul and rips it out: Ian Curtis.

For these choices I voted Peter Gabriel, Freddie Mercury, Jerry Garcia(Sing Me Back Home from Sunshine my favorite-kills me).
I’d have voted for Emmylou Harris also.
