This is a fantastic project and the tour is very comprehensive. I hope there's some interest on the forum.
Side Eye. He started touring with them in 2019 I think, a new lineup with keyboards and drums. The first concert ticket I have bought since COVID is for the early show in Chicago in October.
Yep...the clip I posted is from the Side Eye album. Pat already did some dates in 2019 before it had to be curtailed. It's with James Francies and Joe Dyson.
The new album is from the same show that was broadcast by NHK in Japan. The track posted today sounds amazing, blowing away the NHK. Will put in my order very soon!
It's been ages since I've seen Pat. I think the last time was at the Coltrane Vanguard box release party in...1995?
I caught the first show of the Side Eye tour in 2019. It's a treat for long time fans as Pat is drawing on material throughout his 40+ year career. Both James Francies and Pat trigger bass sounds from their equipment set up so the trio has a nice full sound. Pat finished the show with a beautiful acoustic guitar medley that practically had me in tears. It was a great night.
That interview deserves its own thread. I really enjoyed it, especially the beautiful playing by Pat later in the interview. I first heard Pat in the early 80s but the music wasn't for me at the time (I liked punk, prog, old rock, etc). I think I will start checking out his stuff!
Excellent! And let us know what your early Pat dive reveals. And do feel free to create a separate thread. I am not a musician at all so a lot of the technical stuff goes over my head, but my guess is that there is more than enough meat here for those in the know.
what happened with this record ? streaming is up but Amazon has the cd listed as October 22nd now ? and Vinyl the following week ?
I listened to the new record on streaming yesterday. The title is Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV). Looking up the album art on Discogs (it's been released in Europe I guess) "V1.IV" refers to the changes in drummers of this lineup (Marcus Gilmore, the band's fourth drummer, was on these gigs in New York in 2019). It has three new Metheny compositions of which the first is a long piece reminding me a bit of "Imaginary Day."
I would love to hear what folks think of the new “Side eye “ album. Essential purchase? Any big shifts in direction? More acoustic? More fusion? Etc.
On holliday in Italy. Just bought it as a souvenir. I don’t quite understand the project. Are there 5 different versions of this album or…. The name and the personel listings seem to indicate this.
Pretty much his usual fare (like Unity Band, From This Place, etc.) but with new players. The new wrinkle is the lack of a bass player with keyboardist James Francies covering the bass in various ways.
I think this is just mentioning that there have been five different lineups of the group, with different drummers.
