I'd almost consider this a tribute to Lyle Mays. Keyboard centric. He revisits Bright Side Life in a live version. Nice listening. My wife really likes it.
i’ve just seen side eye. it’s rare to feel in the presence of musical greatness these days, or maybe any days, but i was. the playing was simply stunning beyond measure. if anyone is on the fence, see them. the record is like a bad black and white xerox copy of the reality.
Saw the show from the fifth row Monday. Having never gotten a chance to see Metheny live, it was all I could have hoped for. Old and new material, full arsenal of axes from the harp acoustic to the Roland synth along with the iconic ES-175. Two hours, no intermission, masked audience. It was fascinating to observe the "bass-less" trio format in action. Pat plays a lot of bass lines while James Francies uses two hands on the grand piano. Anybody know the story on the "kinetic sculpture" (?) with flashing lights behind the band? Is that something new or historical?
I saw Metheny on Friday (he did 7 PM and 9:30 PM shows, I was at the first). I've heard the official Side Eye live release and some unofficial recordings from 2019 and earlier but it was good to see them in action. Francies did many of the bass lines with his left hand on a synth sounding like an acoustic bass; on some songs he played Hammond and at a few points Metheny covered the bass to allow Francies to use both hands for a piano solo. Mostly old material but there was a new song at the end of the set in the style of The Way Up or From This Place. Audience was masked as was Metheny's tech Carolyn Chrzan who as usual was busy swapping out guitars and attending to every issue.
Saw them last night in Detroit at Orchestra Hall( what a great venue), really enjoyed it. First time I have seen him in a non-festival setting in 20 or so years. I think it was mostly the same as this set Pat Metheny Setlist at Paramount Theatre, Denver Saw the Velvet Underground doc earlier in the day at the D.I.A. so it was a big day out.
I don't know if he has different stage set ups, but what I saw in Detroit looked to to be two xylophones set up vertically w/ a large box like thing in between them. The xylophone-like things lit up at times but didn't seem to do a whole lot. The stage was somewhat lit up, the tech pulled the covers off of them 5 or 6 songs into the set and that rig was partially blocked by the drum kit, so maybe I missed something.
At the show I saw they used the mini-Orchestrion only in the last song and it didn't seem to do a lot.
Looking FWD to this.....I saw the man live in Europe and I must say I was astounded by his musical prowess.
I have tkts for DC next month and Florida in Feb. Saw previous iteration of side eye in Florida - streaming the album sounds great. How bout “Lodger”? Amazon says the CD arrives Friday.
Yes, he has a more portable Orchestrion, which I think he first used on the brief duo tour he did with Larry Grenadier around the time What’s It All About was released.
The keyboard player James Francies is the great new addition in Pat's musical world. He's a phenomenal talent with a great sound.
I have been listening to this on Spotify, and am enjoying it. Does anyone have the vinyl? If so, how is the pressing quality? Thanks
Saw this tour last night in Boston , A+++ all the way , great setlist , everyone played great & the crowd really was into what they were seeing . Certainly a tour worth seeing , Pat is playing great as always I'll Echo the side eye Vinyl is a really nice pressing , as mentioned above , just change the inner sleeves , they are the worst .....
I picked this up, and gave it a quick clean. As others have posted, it sounds fantastic. The paper sleeves suck, but I put all my LPs in MoFi sleeves anyway.
