Thank goodness we are now back to a solid McCartney mid tempo, melodic tune. Some nice bits and short enough to maintain interest.

Confidante is one of my favorite Paul McCartney songs ever. Lovely, wistful, bittersweet. The lyrics take you to a place pop songs almost never go: Recalling a friendship that he had to move on from (yes, it was inspired by his guitar, but the implications are clearly much broader), but with neither regret nor relief. He had to do it. It was time to move on. But he still remembers those days fondly he's glad he had them, and he does miss them sometimes. The melody is exquisite. The instrumental break, though simple, is perfect. But there's something else going on here, too:

This song is a sequel to Do It Now.

I'm not saying Paul consciously intended it to be, but it is nonetheless. In Do It Now, the character is a (presumably) young man getting ready to make a break with the past and head out toward something new -- something at least partly unknown and uncertain, but that he knows he has to do. In Confidante, it's decades later and he's looking back. He did the right thing. He had to make that break. But he still has those fond memories and loves that he has them to hold onto.

Even if the rest of Egypt Station was Paul reading the phone book, the way these two songs play off each other makes the album a masterpiece.

A masterpiece. The intimate and personal expression of emotions is the seal of every teardrop that emanates with the musical notes combined in perfect harmony with the verses, vocals, and instruments. The piano intro is powerful and intense. Its sound touches the core of the heart, opening the secrets of the soul. It's an incisive moment of reflection that connects everything. Bravo!!!

    Lyrics:

I got crows at my window
    Dogs at my door
I don't think I can take any more
What am I doing wrong, I don't know

    My brother told me
    Life's not a pain
That was right when it started to rain
Where am I going wrong, I don't know

    But it's alright, sleep tight
    I will take the strain
    You're fine, love of mine
    You will feel no pain

    Well, I see trouble
    at every turn
I've got so many lessons to learn
What am I doing wrong, I don't know

Now what's the matter with me
Am I right, am I wrong
    Now I've started to see
I must try to be strong

    I tried to love you
    Best as I can
But you know that I'm only a man
Why am I going wrong, I don't know

    But it's alright, sleep tight
    I will take the strain
Yeah, you're fine, little love of mine
    You will feel no pain

I got crows at my window
    Dogs at my door
I don't think I can take any more
What am I doing wrong, I don't know

Now what's the matter with me
    I don't know, I don't know
    What's the matter with me
    I don't know, I don't know
    What's the matter with me
    I don't know, I don't know

    Relax
Only a few songs left to get the @Who Cares treatment. There are plenty of things to discuss during the waiting. For instance how it even was possible for Paul to make one of the strongest collections of his career at his age. That s hard to believe

One thing I don't recall reading anywhere is when did Paul write these songs? There's a long gap between NEW and ES.

Did it take him several years to write all these? (Probably). Did it all happen in the year or so leading up to recording ES? Anything that had been on the shelf prior to NEW?

We know the music in Frank Sinatra's Party is from the mid-70s. My understanding is the Tedder tracks were mostly organic creations in the studio. Back In Brazil came out of a soundcheck presumably within the few years prior to ES.

I don't find it hard to believe at all, McCartney has come up with very strong collections repeatedly. Many think Chaos is a very strong collection, Flaming Pie is a very strong collection, Memory Almost Full is an absolutely stunning collection! So on Egypt Station McCartney just continued to do what he for the vast majority of his career has always done and that's create absolutely fantastic music!
Some of the songs on these albums are as good as anything McCartney has ever done, I'm talking Beatles, Wings and solo! Not every single song is Earth shattering as we've discussed, but Paul McCartney has never ever lost his touch for writing great songs!
Back in the day when really good music was appreciated, recognized and given it's due, many of these songs would have been hits, and more of these albums would have been #1! Flaming Pie did go as high as #2!

A powerful and fun rock song. There are moments in life when dancing is an energy for the soul, the moment when a spark is in the air to connect with someone else. It's an explosion of happiness, a touching instant of enjoyment. The pleasant and intense melody has a perfect bound with the sweet vocals, the simple but straightforward verses, and the driving rhythm and fast tempo for the creation of a magical journey into something special, unique, and exciting.

    Lyrics:

I saw you flash a smile
That seemed to me to say
    You wanted so much more
    Than casual conversation

    I swear I caught a look
    Before you turned away
Now I don't see the point
    Resisting your temptation

Did you come on to me
Will I come home to you
If you come on to me
Well I'll come on to you

    I don't think I can wait
    Like I'm supposed to do
    How soon can we arrange
    A formal introduction

We need to find a place
    Where we can be alone
    To spend some special time
    Without an interruption

If you come on to me
Will I come on to you
If you come on to me
Well I'll come on to you

Before you grab your coat, I'll try to be discreet
You know we can't be seen
    Exchanging information

I saw you flash a smile
That seemed to me to say
    You wanted so much more
    Than casual conversation

If you come on to me
Then I'll come on to you
If you come on to me
Then I'll come on to you

Yes I will, yes I will, yes I will now
Yes I will, yes I will, yes I will now

If you come on to me
Then I'll come on to you
If you come on to me
Then I'll come on to you

    Yeah, yeah, yeah
