I really like the three-note descending riff / figure in the intro, which is then repeated later on in various places on what sounds like an electric guitar, then a keyboard and also bass. The bass part in the second half of the song is nice, although I wish it was mixed louder. The acoustic guitar also sounds nice throughout. I also enjoy the dual vocals parts later on in the song. As with several songs of the slower / quieter songs on ES and NEW, I prefer them to the single vocal as they sound both more poignant and less "old-man" and wobbly.

As for the song itself, it's pleasant enough without really grabbing me. I'm not hugely convinced by the "butterflies wear army boots" line though: a low 3/5. :)

A catchy, sweet, and fun pop song. Paul is playing with the listener's mind, creating a debate about nothing, affecting the emotions, and causing a reaction about two words. It's an insane misinterpretation, a sonic hallucination, a genius touch, and is just For You. In reality, it's a direct expression of love.

    Lyrics:

    Come on baby now
    Let me look at you
    Talk about yourself
    Try to tell the truth
I could stay up half the night
    Trying to crack your code
I could stay up half the night
But I’d rather hit the road

On the night that I met you
    I was on the town
On the night that I met you

I just wanna know how you feel
Want a love that’s so proud and real
You make me wanna go out and steal
I just want it fuh you
I just want it fuh you

    Come on baby now
    Help me work it out
    I won’t let you down
So you don’t need to shout
I could stay up half the night
    Playing with your head
I could stay up half the night
But I’d rather go to bed

On the night that I met you
    I was on the town
On the night that I met you

I just wanna know how you feel
Want a love that’s so proud and real
You make me wanna go out and steal
I just want it fuh you
I just want it fuh you

    And every day
    In every way
    And every day
    In every way

I just wanna know how you feel
Want a love that’s so proud and real
You make me wanna go out and steal
I just want it fuh you
I just want it fuh you

I just wanna know how you feel

'Fuh You' New Single Out Now

"Paul recalls the process behind the new single: "With this one I was in the studio with Ryan Tedder whereas the rest of the album has been made with Greg Kurstin… We were just thinking of ideas and little pieces of melody and chords and the song just came together bit by bit. And then I would try and make some kind of sense of the story. So it was like ‘Come on baby now. Talk about yourself. Tell the truth, let me get to know you’ and basically I wanna know how you feel, you make me wanna go out and steal. I just want it for you. So that was the basic idea and it developed from there… sort of a love song, but a raunchy love song. There you go – fuh you.""

    A controversial review:

(This Is NOT A) Song Of The Day: Paul McCartney, "Fuh You" : The Recoup

"What makes this horribly cheesy lyric even more upsetting is that aside from that one line and the title, the song itself is a fantastic Paul McCartney pop song. Comedy is hard, and Paul once had a masterful partner who could write amazingly clever lyrics. Yet it is in that cleverness McCartney falters; instead of sounding clever, it sounds incredibly cringe-worthy. I certainly hope he doesn’t think the naughty play on words makes him sounds cool; it doesn’t, and I never thought “rapey” would be the word I would use to describe a song by Sir Paul McCartney. I just hope he doesn’t die before the new album comes out; embarrassing dreck like this has a tendency to be an artist’s unfortunate final statement."

A sentimentality acoustic song. It's not a typical love story, but the genius behind the composition is capable of developing a universal theme. In the case of Paul is about his old guitar. However, the touching and poetic lyrics can describe an old love, in which the memories, ghosts from the past, bring a nostalgic vibe to the mood of the chord progression. The vocals complete the remembrance with a heartfelt tone. In the end, It's a melodic combination of emotions, a teardrop with every sound, a nostalgic desire, a simple but emotional journey. Amazing.

    Lyrics:

You used to be my confidante
    My underneath the staircase friend
But I fell out of love with you
And brought our romance to an end

I played with you throughout the day
And told you every secret thought
    Unlike my other so-called friends
You stood beside me as I fought

    In your reflected glory I
Could dream of shining far off lands
Where serpents turn to bits of string
And played like kittens in my hand

    In our imaginary world
    Where butterflies wear army boots
And stomp around the forest chanting
    Long lost anthems
    Long lost anthems

You used to be my confidante
    My underneath the staircase friend
But I fell out of love with you
And brought our romance to an end

I played with you throughout the day
And told you every secret thought
    Unlike my other so-called friends
You stood beside me as I fought
You stood beside me as I fought

You used to be my confidante

    People Want Peace

Topic song have never been Pauls greatest gift. However on this one he succeeds on every level. Gorgeous, majestic music with an anthemic flair coupled with very strong lyrics makes this a winner of sorts. Some lyrics are extremely poignant and sad like these

Nothing in life is as sad
As a lonely soul searching for peace
Only to find disappointment is waiting
Behind every door that we open
    Every catch we release

The way Pauls delivers those lines are spectacular. This song also benefits from some inventive arrangement like the use of cello. It should also be noted there is a real choir of background singers adding to the thrill.

McCartney at huis very and most spectacular best

People Want Peace” is a track from 2018 album “Egypt Station“, inspired by McCartney’s experience of performing in Israel in 2008. From “Words Between The Tracks” YouTube series:

We had played a gig in Israel quite a few years ago, and I wanted to go to Palestine before I went to Israel, because I was very aware of the political situation there. So I didn’t want to just look like I was ignoring Palestine playing in Israel, although that was where the date was, the gig.

So I made arrangements to go into Palestine across the border, and go to a little music school and shake hands with the kids, and hang out and listen to them playing some music. Just to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.

And then when I came back into Israel I then met with some cool people from a group called One Voice, a political group, kind of thing, a movement. And we ended up wearing their badges on our show in Tel Aviv.

So the whole idea was a peace mission, really, because these kids were great. I say kids, they were kind of young adults. And I’d say to them, “what is it? What do you want to do, you know?”. They say “All we want to do is just live in peace, raise our families, you know, and be able to just get on with our lives in peace”.

And so that tied in with something that when I was a kid. I’d asked my dad and said – you know, we were seeing all the wars and stuff, on the newspapers, on TV and so I’d said to him “what is it? You know, do people want peace or do they just like to fight?”. And he sort-of looked at me, very quietly said “No, no, son, people want peace. It’s the politicians and the leaders who get into wars. It’s not the people”. So that always struck me as a great phrase.

    Paul McCartney

    From MOJO, October 2018:

People Want Peace is his latest attempt to write an ecumenical hymn-cum-anthem, partly inspired by McCartney’s experiences around the controversial decision to play a gig in Tel Aviv in 2008, which some friends had counselled him against. “They said ‘You can’t go’. The trouble is, when you say that to me, it makes me wanna go. I don’t like being told what to do“. He performed while endorsing One Voice, a global initiative supporting Israeli and Palestinian activists who seek a negotiated two-state resolution to the conflict. “It was something my dad had said when I was a kid“, he say. “‘The people want peace, it’s the politicians who mess it up.’ And that’s held pretty true.

We needed some extra percussion instruments. We had these little bells and he put them around his ankles. He was just having fun, but he was like “Let’s record these bells as a percussion instrument”. It was just a random idea, but he was dancing around for the length of the song during two or three takes.

    Greg Kurstin

Each track of “Egypt Station” has been given individual artwork that was first published on Twitter on August 14, 2018

    Lyrics

    Ladies and gentlemen
    I'm standing before you
    With something important to say
With some trepidation I crave your attention
But I'm not gonna to let anything
    Get in my way

The message is simple, it's straight from my heart
And I know that you've heard it before
    But what does it matter
    We're in it together
And I'm not quitting while people are crying for more

    People want peace
    People want peace
A simple relief from their suffering
    People want peace

    People want peace

Nothing in life is as sad
As a lonely soul searching for peace
Only to find disappointment is waiting
Behind every door that we open
    Every catch we release

    Brothers and sisters
    I beg you to listen
I know that it isn't too late
    For we are the people
    The voices of freedom
And we're all perfectly clear that we
    Don't want to wait

    People want peace
    People want peace
A simple relief from their suffering
    People want peace

    People want peace

    People want peace
    People want peace
    People want peace
    People want peace

I think it's around "People Want Peace" that the album kicks into high gear for me, where music, lyrics and melody come together and beautifully inhabit the carpe diem theme in different kinds of interesting ways.

The first half of the album sounds a little too frivolous in comparison. A song like "Fuh You" actually has a great tune, but the lyrics and 21st century pop sheen take away from it.

"People Want Peace" is a solid album track, but the best is yet to come.

PWP was a lesser track for me originally, but it’s grown with multiple listens for me. It’s not top tier Macca, but it has some nice moments and some good instrumentation. Decent.

Yeah, one of Paul's better topic songs as it shifts gears at the right moment. A typical Macca track that is a bit timeless, it could also be from the 80s or 90s.

The endless plinking piano gets old quickly. Paul’s message is simple as he says but then so is the song. There isn’t much oomph to it at all. It’s nice and all but it is totally average on all levels. There is some interesting moments in the middle-eight which is the only section that perks up my ear. The songs breaks out into a football chant or sorts at the end and finishes with more plinking piano.

I sort of like the”plinking” piano, also like the cellos in the arrangement. Agree about the middle-right though-it s brilliant as expected from the un-crowned King of middle-eights. One could make a thread only dealing with Pauls bridges and middle-eights.

I remember reading the lengthy Kurstin interview (could have been the lengthy Paul one) leading up to the album release. It said something to the effect of " . . . and [Kurstin] plays piano on "People Want Peace".

I thought "oh! interesting" and filed that away as a curio to listen for when I did get the album.
