omikron was going to get tired of saying "I love this song" to every Beatles song posted so he's been hanging out some on the Macca III thread.

    Still following here though.

    Just thinking
If McCartney III turns out to be real
I guess we have to deal with all the new songs here as well.

I like IF I FELL, but I don't think it's a superior composition to AND I LOVE HER. For me, AILH has far and away much more interesting guitar playing and musical changes.

I think McCartney is one of the absolute greatest balladeers in the history of rock!

I think the unexpected key change in And I Love Her is quite cool. Was that a George Martin idea?

Yes, but we should give it a little time. It took me a few weeks to fully digest Egypt Station.

Well, in fairness it will be discussed ad nauseum in the actual McIII thread.

You're right. A couple weeks break may be needed.

And as we know, this group here is free of cobwebs and actually discusses things.

And I love her and All My Loving would both fit fairly unobtrusively on Rubber Soul. One of the things I love about the Beatles is the songs that break new ground and are sign posts pointing the direction of what is to come from the band.

Man, have we all gotten distracted by the shiny thing that is McCartney III!

    Next up- If I Fell

    IF I FELL(Lennon/McCartney)

JOHN 1980: "That was my first attempt at a ballad proper. That was the precursor to 'In My Life.' It has the same chord sequences as 'In My Life' --D and B minor and E minor, those kinds of things. And it's semi-autobiographical, but not consciously. It shows that I wrote sentimental love ballads-- silly love songs-- way back when."

PAUL 1984: "This was our close-harmony period. We did a few songs... 'This Boy,' 'If I Fell,' 'Yes It Is' ...in the same vein, which were kind of like the Fourmost-- an English vocal group, only not really."

'If I Fell' is a classic duet by the Nurk Twins.
I've always said those two were born to sing together and this is a perfect example of what I mean.
This is much more a John song than a Paul song but I sin't complainIng.

I suspect that McCartney's only contribution to If I Fell was in working out the harmony parts. But they do add a lot.

If I Fell. As far as I know this is pretty much a John song. But the tight vocal harmonies allow Paul to make an impression. My favorite Paul moment is, of course, his voice cracking on the word "vain" during the bridge. Then they punch in on the word "hope" - which is audible. Much less audible on the 2009 remasters, but it's there.

And I Love Her is such a beautiful song. Gorgeous and timeless.
And though Paul's, a true group effort as well.

They really did some heavely harmonies. Love all these songs. And this one is truly lovely.

I had never seen these quotes, at least not John's. Referencing Silly Love Songs :D
