    Dr. Pepper What, me worry?

Questionable track and I really dislike the beginning and the III Imagined version extends the beginning to make it even worse!

Deep Down is just annoying. No, at 3 minutes it would be annoying, at nearly 6 it borders on excruciating.

Can't really comment lately as I am unfamiliar with the the songs being discussed.
But! I do want to say that this thread is coming up on its second anniversary next week.
    It's been a blast.

Fitting as we have only one song left after this one, so next week will be about it for me unless Paul drops a surprise album for Christmas! Always hoping for that Christmas album Paul always talks about or anything else he wants to release.

In fact I do like Deep Down (only the McCartney III version) :hide: .

Am I the only one thinking that this song has a really good groove?

No, it's really not that bad of a track if it didn't have that wailing Yoko Onoesque Paul vocal flowing through all of it. I would actually love to hear a version with moaning Paul turned off to hear what else is on there.

I might be a bit off base on my genre styles here but Paul shouldn't be making hip-hoppy dance music.

It's sort of interesting in Paul's approach to this. I can see he was really wanting to take on the challenge of writing a song like this. He kind of took on a late-night swank vamp vibe in the music style. Those synth horns are about as cheesy as you can possibly get.

So, I'm just going to toss out here that the the Pet Shop Boys' "Tuesday" is an excellent example of how an old British guy should approach this music style.

Instead, this is what Paul does.

    Deep Down

A highlight. Chaos and creation between emotions and desires, darkness and light, sadness and happiness. Brilliant work. Bravo!!!

    Lyrics:

    Gonna get deep down
    Wanna do it right
    Wanna get deep down
    And look around
    This end of town tonight

    Wanna get you up
    Gonna take a bite
    Gotta let me know
    If we can throw
    A party every night

    Wanna get deep down
    Wanna do it right
    Wanna get deep down
    And look around
    This end of town tonight

    I wanna pick you up

    Paul's own words:

Paul McCartney: read the exclusive track-by-track story of 'McCartney III'

    "‘Deep Down’

“That was just a jam I had. I had a beat I liked and chords that I liked and I didn’t really have much of an idea but I had had this thing that said “get deep down, wanna get deep down” as this idea. I didn’t quite know what I meant by deep down except I want to have a deep relationship with you or whatever so I just really kept going on it. Some songs you know you don’t quite know where you’re going; you’ve just got half an idea and it’s really just that you’re enjoying the groove and that one was one of those, I just thought of ideas as I went along.”"

Deep Down is not one of my favorites from MIII. To my ears, it lacks structure and just goes on and on with little in the way of focus or direction. Adding to that is the complete lack of any thought to the lyrical content. This is the definition of filler.

It's a pleasant remix with interesting sound elements, highly experimental. Devonté extracts McCartney II's essence to create an optimistic version of the song.

    Encore,

Deep Down (Blood Orange Remix) (4:24)

What's It Like to Remix Paul McCartney?

"Elsewhere in L.A. around the same time, Dev Hynes was puzzling through a new version of McCartney’s low-key jam “Deep Down.” “Whenever I do remixes, it’s always such a conundrum,” says Hynes, who performs as Blood Orange. “If I like a song, I don’t want to redo it, you know? So I try to see it almost as an alternate reality. … I thought ‘Deep Down’ would be one of the most challenging songs, which is why I picked it.”

Stranded for the moment at “a rented house with very limited equipment,” Hynes started by pitching up McCartney’s original vocals by five percent. “Then I removed all the chords and played around on keys to find some new, interesting chords to match,” he says. He went on to layer in the sounds of a chintzy clarinet and cello that he’d bought online during the pandemic — “They’re, like, the worst-made instruments you can imagine, but I used them” — and tinkered with studio effects until he arrived at an elegant marriage of Revolver-ish psychedelia and his own cool, sophisticated pop.

“I had to record some backwards guitar,” Hynes adds with a laugh. “I don’t know how many times I’m ever going to be linked to Paul McCartney in my life!”"
