'The Color of Money ' was lousy...but not Newman's fault.
Tom Cruise's hairstyle was its downfall. It wasn't perfect .

NOOOO! The Color Of Money is a fantastic flick. I'll agree that Cruise's hair is completely wacked, but Newman is on point. I love the appearance Of Forrest Whitaker, and John Turturro.

Paul Newman was in a movie late in his career in which he had a minor part - he played a handyman type of guy who was always fixing things. What movie was that? I can’t remember the title.

    Nobody's Fool? Good movie.

He kinda played the same guy in 'Absence of Malice' - a little brighter than he was given credit for. Like "The Verdict", another compelling movie, grounded in his performance at the center.

John Huston's "Judge Roy Bean" is an interesting western if you want to see him play a sentimental psychotic.

I thought maybe "Nobody's Fool" as well, but his part certainly wasn't minor. He was the main character.

    He's great as Lew Harper...

I don't think you're referring to "Nobody's Fool" (1994) but probably "Empire Falls" (2005) which wasn't a movie but an HBO miniseries.

His wife, Joanne Woodward, was also featured yet they have no scenes together.

Newman seemed to really enjoy himself here, his last onscreen role.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The movie (or TV miniseries, although I thought it was a movie) I am trying to identify was not Nobody’s Fool, nor Absence of Malice. I also doubt it was Slapshot, or Harper or the Drowning Pool. I’ll have to check the others suggested.

It was a long time ago and I have forgotten most everything about the movie - the plot, the other actors, the name, etc. - except for one scene. In that scene, Newman (who in my memory was not playing the leading man) entered the scene dressed casually - I think he was driving a car - and was carrying a part - could have been an appliance part, a car part or something else, and it seemed he had just gone somewhere to pick up the part and was on his way to fix something with it. The scene was not about that detail, because there was dialogue with the other actors about whatever was happening in the movie which had nothing to do with Newman’s repair project.

I guess the reason why I remember this scene all these years later is that it struck me that Newman was really acting out how he lived his own life. He was into cars and racing them. He made his own salad dressing. He was married to Joanne Woodward for 50 years. He didn’t live in Hollywood, he lived in Connecticut. He probably fixed stuff that broke around the house. In short, he was a regular guy.

Otherwise I recall this was one of his later movies and I am pretty sure he was not the leading man, so that should narrow down the choices.

Any more ideas welcome. I would enjoy seeing that movie again for some inspiration, since I always seem to be fixing broken things at this stage in my life !

Slap Shot. The smile on his face as he says "all I can get" is the best.

Lots og great choices here, and I agree. I will add:

    The Sting

The Poker scene, by itself, is worth the price of admission. Having Robert Shaw in the mix, is like icing on the cake.

They’re not Hud, Slapshot, etc:, no one has mentioned them, two movies that blend together ....
The Young Philadelphians and From The Terrace

and on a completely different note, The Hudsucker Proxy.

Thankfully his looks never held him back.

The two that I feel like I enjoyed the most were Harper and The Outrage.
