    Example in my collection:

    Frankie Rose and The Outs

Frankie Rose is a real person's name.

Do you file groups like this under "R" for Rose or "F" for Frankie Rose and The Outs?

File under the lead performer's last name unless the backing band has achieved greater fame than the leader.

I agree with above. It should be under 'R'.

Let's say Frankie Rose and the Outs disband - well Frankie Rose will still be filed under 'R' if Frankie releases any solo material. That way someone will find ALL Frankie Rose - with or without the Outs.

Yes, R. You'd only use the main person's first name if (s)he lacked a last name, like Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Good point, and Frankie Rose has actually released two subsequent albums under just her name.

Do you want your collection keep together or separate:

Band on the Run (Paul McCartney & Wings)
    Ram (Paul & Linda McCartney)
    Venus and Mars (Wings)

Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
The Cry of Love (Jimi Hendrix)
Band of Gypsys (Band of Gypsys)

It doesn't bug me if one artist is in two places (solo and band or two different bands), but when it gets beyond that, I go crazy. Hence, Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, Palace Music, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and all collaborations or other projects featuring Will Oldham are together under O.

It's all about hierarchy isn't it? Hendrix is clearly an "H" with or without an Experience, Neil Young is a "Y" with or without Crazy Horse. On the other hand, Rod Stewart & The Faces is going under "F" :agree:

    That's a tough one. Here's a more recent example:

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins: Rabbit Fur Coat

    Jenny Lewis: Acid Tongue

Jenny & Johnny: I'm Having Fun Now

First initial. It solves all the problems even if artists are under 3 different letters you know where they are.

I look at the name and whatever is the first thing that pops in my head is how I would do it. Because, most likely, in five years when I'm looking for said album I'll think the exact same way.

In the example mentioned, I'd file it under "R". As for artists that have different variations, like Paul McCartney, I generally keep all his stuff under "M" as the M or W mixture just gets confusing after a while.

The way we used to catalogue for a record store chain:
If it was a "real" persons name: by the last name: Bill Haley And His Comets= H
It it was a "made-up name: by the first name: Flash and the Pan = F ...

Good system -- I guess I do use that for most pseudonyms, like Cat Power, which I think was originally a band name anyhow.

Stores haven't figured this out yet either. For example:

The Derek Trucks band is under 'D' in Pop/Rock, the Tedeschi Trucks Band is under 'T' in Pop/Rock, and Susan Tedeschi is under 'T' in Blues.

Ben Folds Five is another one - sometimes under 'B', sometimes under 'F'.

  17. Here is one I have struggled with in my collection. I have moved it twice and may move it again.
Reverend Horton Heat. Ok, first of all it is the name of the band so it would go under "R." However it's also the name of the leader of the band so under "HO" or "HE?" Lastly, the 'Heat' moniker is a play on Jim Heath's real name so if I go by that it goes under "HE" where I currently have them. Where would/do you people put this one?

    from my record collection:
Neil Young & Crazy Horse goes under 'Y'
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers goes under 'P'
Johnny Marr & The Healers goes under 'M'
    and obviously
Paul McCartney & Wings goes chronologically under 'Beatles' as does (Wings, Fireman, Twin Freaks, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, John & Yoko & John Lennon). That last one might just be me ;)
Tin Machine goes with Bowie too
