After reading the SMiLe thread, I really want to hear this album again, and to figure out which version I should seek out, I decided to make a poll.

Mono - DCC, the AF mastering is good but the DCC has a special "warmth".
    Stereo - Sessions Box set

I voted for the original vinyl, but wish to note that I'm referring to the Pet Sounds/So Tough 2-LP set version, not the original Capitol.

It really depends on your system, if you have a nice mono setup, then the original vinyl mono is the only way! I haven't heard Steve's version but, I bet it's a very close second!

The Greenline Capitol/Toshiba/EMI CP28-1003 Japan CD pressing so far, but I hope to hear the DCC Vinyl one day.

Along with the DCC, I like this version too.

How many releases have there been of this?

I like the stereo mix on the 3CD set.

    I particularly like the DVD-Audio 5.1

    The stereo-mono HDCD is OK.

I like also the duophonic LP - and the duophonic tracks on the Japanese CDs.

  12. Seconded. I don't know why they never got the Stereo mix right again after the boxed set. Even the DVD-A is underwhelming in my opinion.

I cannot remember the last time I got the set out - it was in a fat type jewel box. I think it was the very first official stereo release?

I'm going to have to track this one down. Anyone else in this thread prefer the CP28 to the DCC?

Yes, first official stereo and there were 3 HDCDs in a fat jewel box plus a bonus mono mix HDCD in a cardboard LP replica sleeve.

Mono 1993 DCC Steve Hoffman CD is my go to, but I have never heard the Mono 2009 AF Steve Hoffman CD.

Greenline 2800 CD, followed closely by the 1980 Capitol green label SN-series mono LP and the Brother/Reprise LP.

    Yes.

Is this the brown cover version? I ask because my on CATP/PS LP, the "Stereo" is blotted out. It is just a black rectangle above the logos.

What about the circa 1990 cd with bonus tracks?

As far as I know, all Brother/Reprise versions were released in Mono, "...the way Brian cut it".

Why is there so many stereo versions listed? Except for the 2001 Wouldn't It Be Nice, all stereo verions of the other tracks are from the 1997 Box Set. The 2001 WIBN is on stereo versions released since.

I have the Pet Sounds Session box set (which one is that on the poll list?). It comes with four disks of material, including the mono disk in a replica sleeve. The stereo version, imo, blows the mono out of the water. I was all excited to listen to the mono version of the album, and I don't know if it's the mastering or what, but the mono version in the box set doesn't really sound all that great to me. The stereo version is so much better sounding, it's not even close.

This poll is terribly flawed. Even if we keep this focused on US pressings, where's the original Capitol issue, the Warner 2-fer pressing with Carl & the Passions, the Warner single pocket, the Capitol reissue from the '80s?
