Something I'm not clear on - is Technics still making a "statement" table like the one we saw the mock up of in addition to this, or is this in fact the "new" Technics table?

I'm positive this is the finished product. That mock up we saw a couple months ago was obviously a half formed product. I said then I thought they were just using that to display the new motor and fortunately that was the case! And all that time those sneaky so and so's were probably tolling away at the new SL 1200! SL 1200 petition signers unite!

I wonder what Technics will be showing at CES this week?
Will they have any new info about this TT to share?

I think that is where this story 'broke'.

Based on the announcement I'd say you're probably right. Something to note though is Technic's new product lineup includes both their "premium class" line and their "reference class" line. The 1200GAE will likely be considered part of the premium class, so there's at least room in principle for a higher price point of table.

For some reason I picture something like the Luxman PD-171 with its Jelco-built tonearm, only direct drive the way Japanese turntables are supposed to be :).

Not sure if this is true for all Technics turntables, because even my bottom-of-the-line belt drive SL-BD20B has RCA outputs. Cables not included.

That's why this week is going to be fun. Lots of new product announcements.

What I'm hoping is we'll get some more info about the TT than is available on the Technics web site.

Here's something from a Wired.uk news article about CES

    'HIGHLY DAMPED' TONEARM
The tonearm on the new Panasonic player will be made of aluminium on the SL-1200G, and magnesium on the limited edition GAE. Technical observers and fans of jargon will note Panasonic's advice that the player will employ a "traditional gimbal suspension construction with the horizontal rotation axis and the vertical rotation axis intersecting at a single central point, as well as high-precision bearings using a cut-processed housing".

So the limited edition GAE version gets the magnesium tonearm. The standard edition gets aluminum.

    I'm confused.

    Is Panasonic = Technics?

I thought the parent company of Technics was Matsushita.

Nope. I'd take the Technics over the Rega myself anyday.

I'm betting asking price for the first units hitting the market will be well over U$ 2500.

Yeah. they're going to be steep. I'll never be able to get one. It's okay, because I'm not a huge fan of magnesium. It always feels cheap to me. Like it's plastic.

    I'm interested.

Progress in the Turntable Development #2
To satisfy the discerning acoustic sense of Hi-Fi users…
We are working to suppress even minute motor vibrations by developing a new technology that equips the motor with high-precision rotary positioning sensors guided by a microprocessor-controlled, intelligent servo system.
This is a brand new, exclusive Technics feature that wasn't available on previous Technics turntables.

I guess we can't have everything but I'd love to know the pricing AND whether or not the changes result in audible improvements. There are many who believe the 1200 is simply overrated and doesn't sound all that great at its pricepoint (for the audio enthusiasts); even after throwing all the mods in the world at it.

  20. If the standard model has 78 RPM capability and the price isn't outrageously high, I'm definitely in.
