Heartbreaking. I'm gonna be spinning Pharoah records all day, starting with this one. Here's to the great Pharoah Sanders.
I saw he a few times in the 80’s. It during was the time he had stopped the blowouts and was more low key. One time I must have caught him the right night around 82 or so, because there was blood on the stage by the time he was finished— it was like 1970.
RIP As I was reading this news, I was listening to Izipho Zam on another tab. Sonny Sharrock, Leon Thomas and now Pharoah...
I was fortunate to catch a live gig, out here in Hollywood, once. Sad to know he's gone, and thankful for his long career. Never heard this one; think I shall give it a listen: Elvin Jones | McCoy Tyner Quintet - Love & Peace
On a related note, Pharoah was also on the Don Cherry album Where Is Brooklyn? The Blue Note Classic LP reissue of that is around at a decent price so I'm thinking it might be time to grab that one.
RIP Pharoah. When I was getting into jazz, a friend bought me a copy of Thembi for my birthday. It made a huge impact on me. He was still doing great work right up until last year.
Oh man... This one hurts. Listening to his latest work with Floating Points right now and tearing up. Thank you for the music, sir. It will live forever! RIP
Pharoah was my gateway into jazz when I was 16. Finally got around to seeing him in Santa Monica and the day after Thanksgiving at Yoshi’s in Oakland in 2019. It was something I felt in my soul that I needed to tick off the bucket list. At all those shows, it was clear he was slowing down, but his presence? Absolutely immense. Like an ancient sorcerer, with a sax as his staff. What a sad day.
I made a playlist of the 1977 Copenhagen tape (w/ the Arkestra's Clifford Jarvis on drums). Haven't ever seen this one on Slsk, only on YT. Very nice show. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7krAR7O5kropuoYeAb9c4P2rOoDDAvFP
This is another of my favorite Pharoah Sanders live recordings, with Zakir Hussain and Indian classical ensemble. SQ isn't great but the power of the sound still shines through. Part 2: https://youtu.be/5GPEinZ5Svk
