Thought you Phil fans might dig this from YT: a copy of the rushes of the 20th December 1982 Perkins Palace concert, it is a full version of the Brand X song "And So To F. "

Yeah it’s all over the UK Press also.
Seems like she told Phil she was taking a holiday and went to Vegas and got married, and is now shacked up in Phil’s home.
I must admit after how much money she took him for the first time, he must have been crazy to take her back a second time.
Talk about kicking a guy when he is down!

I knew the moment he described meeting her in the early 1990s that she was no good. The tattoos confirm it. Trash is trash, they have NO value of money. That's why mega-lotto winners always end up broke.

While I have a distaste for tattoos they certainly don't always indicate that.
It's more these wealthy people in entertainment field attract gold diggers.
Sometimes they seem to want people that depend on them, they can feel in control. Either way it's a shame for Collins.

  12. Another @mark winstanley album by album thread, discovered via the Peter Gabriel one I also belatedly found!

My five cents worth… I have always been a PC fan. Never understood the hate or lack of respect he garners in some quarters. I read Not Dead Yet when it came out. I enjoyed it but he did come across at times, to me, as slightly detached, which I think is probably quite common at that level.

Face Value, to me, is a genuine classic album. Our gracious host’s remaster of this record is such an incredible listening experience. It is a proper album, with a beginning, middle and end. Two perfect sides. To paraphrase something Mark said early on, this was recorded pre superstar, pre multimillionaire, the ‘guy who plays drums for Genesis’ making a record with no per-conceived ideas or expectations. Something I think every artist can only ever do once. His songwriting, vocals and drumming are all magnificent. I’ve got the Classic Albums DVD of this album and I’ve watched it a few times. One of my favourite things is PC talking about Eric laying down the slide guitar for The Roof Is Leaking.

I see Hello, I Must Be Going! As something of a FV II, and that’s no bad thing. Together, they make up a near perfect double album of sorts. Another brilliant record.

I hadn’t listened to it in many years, but when I got the remaster in 2015 of …But Seriously, I remembered what a great album it is. In the intervening years since it’s release I had developed a huge appreciation of David Crosby’s music, and finally realised how important his small contributions to that record were. Of course, having become familiar with his solo work, I knew, loved, and still do love his version of Hero made with Phil.

While reading this thread I reconnected to Both Sides. Yes, it could possibly be a shorter, tighter album, but it’s still a good one. It has one of my favourite PC title tracks, and the start of it is one of those things I play in the car when I need something loud, cranked up. Again, with age I appreciate it more, specifically that he recorded it solo. He is not Prince, in that regard, but he still did an incredible job.

This weekend I watched my Blu Ray of Knebworth 1990 for the first time in years, and seeing Phil back then, with his own incredible band (man, does Chester Thompson ever deserve more credit) but also the brief set with Mike and Tony. I imagine that day must be the modern British version of Woodstock, or close enough.

Lastly, I have a Blu ray copy of Live in Montreux and I watch it often. Perhaps not the best of the released shows, energy wise (for me that’s the Paris DVD from the DITL tour) but the quality, video and audio, is near faultless. Very happy to have that record of Phil when he was still playing drums.

Thanks again Mark, another great thread and I enjoyed working my way through it.

    Hi all

First time poster here, hope it’s ok to revive this thread.

I’m a long time PC fan but, until recently was more of a casual/hits fan only (although But Seriously has always been one of my all time favourite albums).

The “Not Yet Dead” book sat unread in my bookcase for quite a while but I finally got round to reading it. It reignited my interest in PC’s music and encouraged me to delve deeper into has back catalogue. While I was delving, I wanted to read some informed opinions about PC’s music and pick up pointers on any gems I might have missed. So, I did some random Google searches and stumbled across this site/thread.

Before I go any further I just want to thank Mark for running such an amazing thread and for all of those who contributed. So many interesting perspectives and useful nuggets of information. For example, I would never have found the vastly superior “Top 40 mix” of “Strangers Like Me” without it!

If there’s anyone out there that missed this thread at the time but would like to discuss PC’s discography now then maybe we could reprise the conversation in some form or other. Or maybe you joined in back in 2019 but would welcome further discussions after the passing of years since.

It’s taken me a while to read all 91 pages of this thread but it’s been absolute blast. Thank you all again!

I like Genesis upto 1983 and I like Face Value. 'In The Air Tonight' is still a brilliant track. I never got around to getting the next album, though I've always thought his fine cover of 'You Can't Hurry Love' is unfairly maligned. After that... Nothing. Too many love songs and draggy uptempo stuff that sounded completely antiseptic. He also fell into that 80s trap of trying to be a Soul Boy. They were all doing that. Modernised Motown pastiches and fanboy cooing onstage with "special guests" like the Temptations or Sam Moore. I also developed a personal dislike for Collins along the way, with his arrogance, his hypocrisy and his midlife crises. It's sad how things have turned out for him health-wise, though. That he's still doing shows is highly commendable and I hope it's a cathartic experience for him.

I listened to his audiobook of "I'm Not Dead Yet" narrated by the man himself. Hearing him read the book really brought it to life for me, instead of just reading it and imagining him doing the narration. There was a lot I learned about the man. If you can get your hands on the audio book, I highly recommend it.

As for his music itself, I've always felt that his first three albums were solid. When he came out with "But Seriously...", I thought it was a mixed bag, especially after coming off of such a hot album like "No Jacket Required". When he reissued his albums, it was quite disappointing that the demos of "In The Air Tonight", "I Missed Again" and "If Leaving Me Is Easy" were not included on the "Face Value" album, especially since they were on the flip side of certain 7" pressings of "If Leaving Me Is Easy" - which was off of "Face Value". Instead, live versions of the 3 afore mentioned songs were put on there. A bit of a head scratcher there! Don't get me wrong, he did include some demos on the reissue of FV and it was more than what could be said about the reissues of "Hello, I Must Be Going!" and "No Jacket Required" - with "Hello" getting only 2 (which had previously appeared on the CD single of "You Can't Hurry Love") and "No Jacket" getting 3. It appeared that he liked to pack the extra CD with live versions of songs instead of studio works. I think that when it came to "But Seriously...", all the demos on there had already appeared as b-sides / bonus tracks on the singles released off that album.

"Both Sides" is where I checked out (tbh, I do have that digitally as well as subsequent releases just to be a completist). It was like he lost that spark for music that was energetic and had settled into more adult contemporary music. I did like his "Going Back" album, but that was an album of covers.

Another thing about Phil Collins... all the flack he got over his appearance, like that mean and nasty "Pop's Ugliest Man" thing. Would they do that to a female artist? You betcha they wouldn't! And it wasn't really true, was it? Not then. I mean, the uglier his character got, the worse he looked, but around the time of Face Value, he looked pretty okay, in a bloke-next-door sort of a way. Not that looks matter, or they shouldn't. If I bought records based on looks, my collection would consist only of Annie Haslam and Olivia Newton-John - just think what I'd have missed out on! But although I have been critical of Phil Collins and think his autobiography was a bit of a whine-fest (although I did enjoy reading it), I think there has been an element of playground bullying about it. What I don't understand is why he would bother so much as an older man with so much success and incredible wealth. I mean, if that isn't a last laugh, I don't know what is.

Great to see there’s still an appetite to discuss PC’s discography.

I agree with an earlier comment that the content of the reissues could have been better. The fact I had to track down an obscure compilation for the single version of ITAT is a tad bizarre.

I’ll start my discography review by going back to the beginning. I’ll aim to make a post for each of the studio albums, mopping up any notable non-album tracks along the way.

    FACE VALUE

This album is new to me (barring a couple of the singles) so the majority of it was fresh to my ears.

ITAT is obviously a classic. On balance, I probably prefer the 7” version (am I alone in this?) although they are both superb. Did not expect to have to hunt down where to find the 7” version though - really surprised it’s not on the FV reissue or easily available elsewhere given how big a hit it was.

The Roof is Leaking is probably the discovery of the album for me, although I’ll admit it took a few listens. I just love its starkness. Am I right in thinking that the live version from 1990 is only available on the rare carousel version of the “Do You Remember?” CD single? Such a shame if so, that version is superb but not cheap to buy. Another missed opportunity with the reissues perhaps.

I’m not generally a fan of instrumentals so Droned & HIH don’t really do anything for me. I’ll happily listen to them when playing the album in full but they definitely won’t be appearing on my “Best of PC” playlist. I realise they that are held in high regard here though so I’m perhaps on the minority on this.

I Missed Again is another of the songs I already knew, but hadn’t heard it few years. Love the PC trademark brass sounds. Great song, one of the stand outs.

I love a ballad (just as well for later years!) so I find You Know What I Mean quite charming. I’m an even bigger fan of If Leaving Me Is Easy - another of my favourite discoveries on this album. I’ll definitely be coming back to both of these again and again.

Overall, I really enjoyed discovering this album. Although there’s nothing I’d skip when listening to the album in full I wouldn’t miss the instrumentals if they weren’t there in all honesty.

    Average iTunes song rating 2.83/5

    High - ITAT 5/5
    Low - Droned & HIH 1/5

"Face Value" isn't my favorite Phil Collins album but is a great album nonetheless. I love the quasi smooth jazz sound of some of the songs ("This Must Be Love", "I Missed Again", "If Leaving Me Is Easy") and I think the whole album was beautifully produced and recorded.

High: "Behind The Lines", "I Missed Again", "You Know What I Mean", "Thunder And Lightning", "I'm Not Moving".
Low: maybe "Droned" but I like the whole album.

As someone who initially bought into the whole "Genesis sucked after Gabriel left and Phil made them go pop" dogma, I was really reluctant to dig into Collins' solo stuff even as I was getting into his era of Genesis and his side work in bands like Brand X.

When I finally did take the plunge and check out his solo material, Face Value really struck me as a great album from cover to cover. Granted, it's been ages since I last went through his catalog (probably somewhere around the reissue campaign) so it's hard for me to single out tracks, but it's easily an album I'd suggest someone put on and ride through. It doesn't feel like the work of someone chasing fame or radio play. It sounds like an honest body of work arranged by someone who loves playing and listening to music. The players are having fun and we get to hear that as the listeners and the sequencing is phenomenal as well.

Considering it started off as, "I have some down time, let's see what I can make," that's genuinely impressive.

I think Phil's catalog is excellent, and the whole idea of this thread was for people to evaluate/reevaluate Phil's catalog.

I would like to point out, as a bit of a clarification, that Phil did release that B-side compilation called Other Sides back in 2019, so while it would have been nice to have those b-sides specific to the album a single came off of (instead of loading the bonus disc with live versions), it makes a nice companion. The one song that I would like for him to issue in full is the redone version of "The Man With The Horn" that was used for the episode of Miami Vice where the lyrics were changed to "Life Is A Rat Race".
