So, Collins is finished as drummer due to his health? I had no idea.

Oh no, not again this subject... Half of the thread on the new Genesis tour is about this thing....

This is a ten year old story, dragged out again because of that BBC interview.

If Collins can’t play, then why wouldn’t it be talked about?

Well, he’s saying he can’t hold a drum stick.

Not just an old story - an ancient one.

Collins has been unwell for the best part of the last twenty years. It’s well-known that he thinks he can’t drum any more.

This is a very odd way to advertise a tour that will sell out without publicity (in Europe, at least). That’s if it goes ahead.

It's not like this is news, nor was it big news when that other thread started either. It's been known since before his book came out about 4 years ago.

So people will have an idea what to expect? Or just being upfront about it?

Because he hasn’t been able to play in over a decade. He did a 2+ year solo tour sitting in a chair for most of the show, as he will for the Genesis show.

I don't think his health is as bad as some of the media are making out.
He has a bad back like a lot of people, and is recovering from a serious drinking binge. That's all.
He did a recent 20 minute radio interview (half way down this page, and he seems fine)

I’m sure diehard fans already know what the score is. Casual fans may not even be aware that Collins was the drummer! :)

Yeah and casual fans are the vast majority. Especially those who don't have tickets yet. I'd wager that by now, most casual fans have some awareness he's also a drummer.

My former neighbor is / was a Rolling Stone senior editor / writer. I remember around 2009 or 2010 he actually went and stayed w Phil for a few days. I wanna say Lake Geneva?
He told me about the neurological thing and that Phil was depressed, spent a lot of time playing with ...I think - going from memory here - model trains and Alamo artifacts?

Erik if you see this, you aren't missing anything over here on O Ave.

As long as Genesis plays their signature song, "Supper's Ready", everything will be fine.

His third marriage collapsed around that time, which didn’t help matters.

In short, he sustained a back injury during Genesis' comeback tour of 2007 and has never fully recovered.

When he recorded the "Going Back" album of oldies in 2010, he had to tape the drumsticks to his hands to perform on some of the material.

The injury made him lose his grip (literally) on the drumsticks. He has had other, unrelated health issues in recent years.

OMG. I just saw a story that says that Peter Gabriel is leaving Genesis!

Does anyone think that they're through after this?

Hmmm, Jason Bonham played with Zeppelin, Ringo Starr's kid played with The Who, and now Phil Collin's kid.

Are drummers like "I don't care what you want to be, you're going to play the damn drums like your old man!!"

Not sure we need another thread on the declining health of Phil Collins, but it seems the recent Last Domino documentary has really shined a light on the subject.
The good news is that his son Nic seems to have a really good head on shoulders, especially considering the intense drama involved with his parents, and is a pretty awesome drummer to boot.

At least he's not blaming his health problems on the vaccine.

What happens to people as they get older can be a bit of a lottery, and I suspect that Phil purchased a losing ticket.

He's 70 now and, considering that there are a lot of people who don't even get to 70, some might say that he's actually lucky to be alive.

Having said that, however, he can't drum any more, his voice is shot, and he has problems standing up and walking, so it's probably more like purgatory, really.

And if he were asked how he would wish to be, I don't think that he'd say "Just as I am."

    Who would wish for that?
