Maybe we should have the gorts change the title of this thread to "Pink Floyd - discussions about everything but Animals"?

I honestly think Meddle might be more popular than Animals at this point. I might be biased since it's my favorite, but it seems to be the go-to favorite of lots of other Floyd fans generally burned out on the big 3. It's hard to quantify objectively, just my perception from people's conversations about Floyd over the last 10 years or so.

I personally find it hard to pick a favourite from Atom Heart Mother to the Final Cut ... for me, probably the best run of albums anyone ever made

They don't need the money so they can be critical.

Even the best produced leak bootleg can't match a well produced genuine ... and back then bootlegs were bloody expensive

They used to do lots of radio shows until DSOTM even playing unreleased material. A lot of this ended up on bootlegs. They stopped these performances for radio in 1974 except for the Venice concert.

Yes, I get this. No more broadcasts. But why not record your own performances if for nothing else than historical record? They knew they were a big deal by then. And releasing any of these officially has zero to do with the bootleggers. At worst official live releases could be "pirated" but that goes for anything that a band releases. I just can't wrap my head around the negligence here. It's not like bands weren't doing this sort of thing at the time.

  10. They were so dysfunctional on so many levels during those years, that has to be the main reason. Yes, it's uncalled for and it is just inexcusable there was no multi-tracks or at least usable soundboards recorded during that period.

I get the impression that they thought they were bucking against the system, but ended up just shooting themselves in the foot to be honest

There's still some soundboard / mixing desk material in the vaults though.
For Is There Anybody Out There? they picked the best of all recorded Wall concerts at Earl's Court (1980/81) and surely they still have all those complete shows lying around somewhere.
Same with the material used for Delicate Sound Of Thunder and Pulse. Of course it's a shame there's virtually nothing from the Dark Side through Animals eras (apart of the Empire Pool gig in 1974).
But some audience tapes fill the gaps rather nicely.

There is film (by Alan Parker's crew) and video of The Wall shows in the vault, and Waters is trying to put the best of it all together to create a complete Wall concert video experience.

James Guthrie will have to re-mix it first.

Pretty sure the edit was completed before he started The Wall tour in 2010. He referred to it in interviews and screened it for his band mates to show them what the original show looked like.

I'm pretty sure that there are plans to eventually release Meddle in 5.1

Dude, you don't want to rush these things!

And it was pulled! Waters wants all the main album remixes done by Guthrie.

Waters needs to hurry his ar$e up ...
Guthrie needs to come to an understanding that 5.1 is 5.1 ... I like some of the stuff he has done, and being reverent to the album he is doing, but use the space.

That's the first I heard of Waters controlling this release in that manner. My understanding is that it was pulled because he was never given the opportunity to listen to it.

Is Meddle considered a main album? I didn't think that they considered anything pre-DSOTM as a main album.

Double whammy: Waters did not sign off on it going out, and only would if Guthrie did the work.
