Pink Floyd - Fictional Second Album with Syd Barrett

Hey guys, I don't know if this topic has an own thread already (couldn't find one),
so I made this for everyone who'd still like to discuss how an imaginary 2nd Pink Floyd album would look like if David Gilmour wasn't around and Syd Barrett contributed on ALL songs
(or in other words: if the band and Norman Smith hadn't vetoed so much during that time). I like the way people speculating about what songs would be included if there wasn't any trouble with Syd...

The official release, 'A Saucerful Of Secrets', includes at least three songs where Syd was definitely featured:
'Remember A Day', 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' and 'Jugband Blues'. Rumours went round that he also could've played on 'Corporal Clegg'.

The band's third single 'Apples And Oranges' (and its b-side 'Paint Box') were also mixed in stereo and, as I heard, were probably planned being part of the second album.
Along with other songs written by Syd: 'Vegetable Man', 'Scream Thy Last Scream' and 'In The Beechwoods'.

Roughly said, any material recorded at De Lane Lea and Abbey Road from mid till late 1967 can be included in the album.

We're welcoming the Early Years box set very soon. And we have heard some snippets of its content already.
When that certain excerpt of 'In The Beechwoods' was played (during the Craig Bailey radio show Creation - The Early Years Of Pink Floyd incl. Nick Mason interview) it just blew me away already.
It has an awesome beginning and to me it would be a great album opener. Also, I loved the 2010 mix of 'Jugband Blues' which has a pretty good new stereo mix.
So, while I listened to the show my idea of creating an own version of the second album just came up (again).

    Okay, here's my creation.

(I don't have a name for this album, yet. Maybe this will come up after the box set arrives and when I'll make the compiling audiowise then) This is just a rough idea, might change later.

Some tracks can be linked together, means that there don't need to be many silent seconds between the songs.
For example, when the laughter in 'Vegetable Man' ends, the guitar of 'Apples And Oranges' will come in rapidly.
Or the noises in the endpart of 'Scream Thy Last Scream' will get a crossfade with 'Jugband Blues'.
Also, I chose two 'John Latham' snippets (though we don't know yet how this will sound) as an improvisation part of the album, similar built like The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

    Side 1
    01 In The Beechwoods
    02 Vegetable Man
    03 Apples And Oranges
    04 Remember A Day
05 Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun

    Side 2
    01 Paint Box
    02 Latham Pt.1
    03 Latham Pt.2
    04 Scream Thy Last Scream
    05 Jugband Blues

Source of the tracks 'In The Beechwoods', 'Vegetable Man', 'Scream Thy Last Scream' and 'Jugband Blues' will be the 2010 mixes which are included in the Early Years box set.
On Side 2 the tracks 'Latham Pt.1' and 'Latham Pt.2' will be self chosen passages of the 'John Latham' recording material which is also included in the box set.

Feel free to write your own 'fictional second album' creations! For the guys who already made some creations: will you update your own tracklist maybe after you get the box set?
And how would you name a second full album from the Syd-era?

I wouldn't include In The Beechwoods. It's obviously an unfinished backing track.
And you're including Latham tracks that you haven't heard yet?

I know 'Beechwoods' is unfinished, but it maybe would fit good as a long instrumental intro.
And the 'Latham' tracks were just an idea, I read that these are improvised recordings and it would be a good link to the Piper album, so both albums would have have an improvisation part.
Just hoping that any Latham part sounds great enough.^^

I think he's fantasizing a finished Beechwoods for these purposes - which you can actually do in your mind every time you hear it, which justifies including it to me.

My thing with the above is, Set The Controls kind of doesn't fit. Maybe rearrange like this:

    Side 1
    01 In The Beechwoods
    02 Apples and Oranges
    03 Remember A Day
    04 Vegetable Man
    05 Jugband Blues

    Side 2
    01 Paint Box
    02 Latham Pt.1
    03 Set The Controls
    04 Latham 2
    05 Scream Thy Last Scream

And yes, this is a shot in the dark not having heard any Latham....

About 'Beechwoods', I actually had something in mind like Deep Purple had on their first album starting with an instrumental, 'And The Address'.
But yeah, probably the unfinished Beechwoods track would have some empty sections an average listener can hear clearly out of it.

Actually your STCFTHOTS does fit where it is. Placed after Remember A Day like on Saucerful. Something just seemed off with the flow to me. Maybe it had more to do with the 1-2 end of Scream and Jugband. Dunno.

I actually had the Jenner mix of 'Scream Thy Last Scream' in mind, which I could re-cut with a fade out of the crowd noises in the end...
This was (kinda) related to the crossfade between 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Jugband Blues' on the Echoes compilation.^^

Would LOVE to include it, but, you know, looks like the recording wasn't found in the Floyd archive.

Maybe portions of the Latham tracks could be used as linking pieces between the proper songs. Think of this album as being in the shadow of Sgt Pepper like other albums at the end of 1967.

Are these quotes from the Early Years box set thread? Well, I just wanted to make it a main topic, so it has a thread on its own ;)

I've often wondered if that odd middle eight in "Clowns and Jugglers" was a snippet of "Beechwoods"...

During the mid or late 1967 recordings, did the band already had plans how to call their next album before they went to 'A Saucerful Of Secrets'?

OK. I was holding back when it was mentioned earlier in the mega thread. But here is mine. (I have some slightly different rules. This is an "alternate universe" album, as if Syd hadn't melted down.)

The Floyd could have easily done another album for Christmas of 1967, to compete with the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" EP.

This disc requires some work. If they had done finished mixes for the unfinished tracks as listed after each track, and recorded 2 other existing songs, they could have thrown this together fairly easily.

The one major ringer here is the assumption that "Clowns and Jugglers" was rattling aound in Syd's head for at least 6 months before he first recorded it with Peter Jenner in May of '68. Keep in mind that "The Gnome", "Effervescing Elephant" and "Bob Dylan Blues" were all written in 1965.

That's an interesting perspective, man! A shame some of the songs indeed weren't finished (or even recorded anyhow).

In a certain way, while I read this, I had something in mind like what if the band had recorded their Games For May concert.
This was their first concept related show with screenings, bubble effects, quadrophonic sound system, etc. What a lost opportunity...

    This looks cool, too.
For the song 'Saucerful' I wish they had recorded drums, bass and co for the 'Celestial Voices' part.
It was one of the (studio) tracks I heard after a live recording (probably the Ummagumma version) introduced me to it, and tbh I was disappointed a bit.

This is my effort. You will notice I ordered the songs the same way they did for Piper. The instrumentals are in the same place. The same with non-Syd songs.

I used the original working title of Piper. We have 9 songs Syd wrote or played on.

Vic Singh, who did the original cover for Piper had alternate versions. Further, the back cover of Piper was a Syd drawing. There are several more Syd works of art available, some are from his time in college, and others are sketches. I also really like the OP album cover picture.
