I've only seen the first film, “Planet of the Apes,” 1968. I have seen bits and pieces of other films, but not in their entirety.

The reason the first one worked for me was because of the unknown. It was a complete adventure. As I recall, I didn't know what to expect from any part of the film. Sure the title indicated that there were going to be apes involved, but I don't remember much of any hype back then that would have given away much of the plot and details.

Finding out that the space craft was on a mission for so very long was a surprise, and then when I first saw one of the apes on the screen, I recall being quite shocked. It had a lot of impact. Then the struggle of the new humans to interact and communicate was well done, especially when “Bright Eyes” first spoke. Then the biggest surprise of all at the end.

All subsequent films seem lacking for me, because those experiences cannot be relived for the initial time. In subsequent films, most elements seem too familiar.

I picked the first one and the last three. I don’t remember the four that followed the original, and I skipped the 2001 remake.

Not seen the new ones. The Burton one put me off bothering any further with this franchise.

I enjoy Beneath quite a lot. Quite creepy.

Burton's is an abomination...but if you like the earlier films the new series (Rise, Dawn & War) are fantastic.

Burtons should never have been allowed. I picked the first one and then the recent trilogy. But 2 and 3 in the original films are good too.

I remember watching the original Planet of the Apes as kid. My family was on vacation somewhere and we were in a motel for the night and this was probably the Sunday Night movie. I couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8 and I was hooked. Always thought it was a cool movie and concept. Been a fan of the original ever since. The newer versions were not that same experience for me.

I felt they did a great job on the last 3 Apes movies...I was entertained, but nothing can best the impact of the final scene in the first original movie! I saw this at the movies and totally was blown away as a youngster!
    WOW!!!

I have seen the first two several times, the remaining three once each (which one has the apes wearing the uniforms from “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”-probably Conquest) and the 2001 remake. The first one has the dichotomy of “how come Taylor can’t figure out he is on Earth-they speak English and can’t he see the moon?” vs he needs to be on Earth to get the famous last scene. For some reason I have a fondness for “Beneath “ although logically it is pretty bad. Maybe it’s just agreeing with Taylor and Brent to nuke Ape Planet and its mutants of Victor Buonos.

Nothing wrong with "Escape", except the obvious lower budgetary restraints... They didn't cheap out on composer though (Jerry Goldsmith)...

I like the story ideas in "Battle", but boy does that film suffer from hideously bad production values... And while I like Claude Akins as a character actor (especially in 50s/60s TV Westerns), he just doesn't cut it as an ape for me... Had they actually had a budget, the story of "Battle" itself is a decent one, that of Caesar trying to build a new society, only to have it threatened from within and without.. The idea is good, the execution of that idea is pretty bad... That said, I still prefer "Battle" to the newest rebooted franchise.
