What redbook version do you think is the best of Pink Floyd's classic album?

Not wanting to poop on your poll (so to speak), but didn't we already establish that there are variants of the Capitol/Harvest dics - where some are the same as poll option number one (i.e. made in Japan), while others are not? If this is the case, we need to distinguish these in the poll.

Another quick point: relatively few people have heard the Toshiba-EMI version, and I wonder how many people have actually heard ALL those versions.

    Cool poll, though. :righton:

I voted for the Super Audio disc, but the real winner is the hirez layer on that disc not the Red Book layer. :)

I also like the Harvest version. I have one from Holland and one from Japan.

I don't assume that many have heard all the versions...but everybody who has at least two versions can contribute something.

As for the variants of the Toshiba/EMI CD, can we agree that "Toshiba/Emi CP 35-3017 (black traingle)" (sorry about the spelling error) applies only to the CD with the black triangle? All other early CDs would then fall into the 2nd category of "Capitol/Harvest CDP 7460012".

    I like the MFSL.

I like the DSD layer of the SACD a bit better, but the CD layer has a haircut (and it sounded wrong to me before I saw any waveforms):

I'm surprised that the MFSL option wasn't differentiated between the UD1 and UD2 versions. The UD1 version sounds much more natural and is the best Redbook version IMO.

I voted for the MFSL, but wish I could've specified the UD1 version only.

Both the SACD and the redbook inside sounds best to my ears, and the MFSL doesn't sound all that far away.

I know this has to do with redbook, but the SACD must be experienced.

They use the same digital master, so perhaps jitter is the culprit. And different setups may have different levels of susceptibility to jitter, so not everyone may hear the same differences. Just a theory.

I have original EMI release - EMI Toshiba,
    EMI Swindon remaster,
EMI Uden subsequent remaster with new artwork
    SACD.

    I prefer the SACD.

Can't agree. I have a solid black Japanese 35-3017 that is clearly NOT the Capitol/Harvest 46001 master, as I used to own both (dumped the latter).

Regardless, it is widely considered here that there is something different about the two discs, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to give a choice between the two.

I must say I don't really like any - never enjoyed listening to the album at all

The surround sound SACD is impressive for showing off surround - especially using a unidisk but I'd never call it a musical masterpiece.

can I vote for Meddle vinyl?

I've heard four of the seven versions listed, and I still like the MFSL (UD1).

The black triangle disc has the best redbook layer.

The SACD DSD 2 channel layer is the best ever stereo version of this album. Unfortunately that can not be voted on in your poll.

No, and you're thread crapping. :shake:

  18. Thank you, VeeDub, this is what I've been trying to say (this is my fourth post on it now). There are some Japanese Harvest discs which have 35-3017 on the inner ring - making them a black triangle disc, but under the "CDP 7460012" brand. These must surely be the same mastering as - the black triangle.

I voted for the black triangle but doubt it will win the poll due to the rarity of it.

    Agreed Aaron. :righton:

I'm fairly certain that the Harvest with the CP35-3017 stamped on the inner ring is the same as the black triangle version and that's why the number is there.

Aren't the 20th and 1992 the same master (and maybe the Shine On box as well)?

I remember some discussion about this recently.

I think the SACD Red Book layer sounds better than either MFSLs. I have both and did some extensive listening when the SACD came out.

I love Mobile Fidelity but I have always found this particular album to be unspectacular sonically. I think there is much hype.

If the black triangle CP35 is made from the same tape/mastering as my Pro-Use LP, I vote for that one. I've never heard the title sound better than the Pro-Use...

    Hi Aaron,

Yep, that was my vote. I'm really surprised the SACD redbook layer is winning by so much. I dig the EMI and MoFi more.

    Take care,
    Jeffrey

    So...
    The poll could read:
    Toshiba/Emi CP 35-3017 (black traingle)
    Harvest CP 35-3017 (inner ring)
    Capitol/Harvest CDP 7460012
    MFSL UD1
    MFSL UDII
    Shine On box
    20th anniversary edition
    Capitol/Emi remaster from 1992
    SACD redbook layer
    SACD stereo layer
    Whew!
    It's as bad as vinyl!
    And I thought; 'bit's is bit's'!!!
